Mexico's top immigration official said Monday the country will not order the militarization of the border with Guatemala as caravans of residents from Central American countries make their way north.

Interior Secretary Olga Sánchez Cordero said Mexico will regulate and provide security to migrants from Central America, El Universal newspaper reported.

She added that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's government is "not repressive" and won't militarize its southern border "under any circumstances."

Sánchez Cordero's comments follow López Obrador's vow to respond with "peace and love" to U.S. threats to close the U.S.-Mexico border.

President Trump vowed in recent days to shut down the southern border -- the world's busiest commercial frontier --

I was evidently mistaken that the President could take extraordinary action in the face of clear and present danger to the nation including outright invasion. It appears he is in fact powerless.

No need to shut the border down. Just “reassign” officers from the Ports of entry to the drug smuggling and human trafficking routes. The days long wait to cross the border from Mexico due to understaffing will be spectacular.

Aside from the intimidation value such a slap in the face of Mexico’s pres has it frees some border-and-customs agents who would normally be stopping traffic at the border stations, asking for visas, green cards, etc, having dogs sniff for drugs, check luggage for contraband and stuff like that-they could be deployed on the border in the areas where there are lots of illegal crossings to apprehend mojados instead-every little bit helps...

And Obrador will not look good to the people who put him ion office if he loses face-Latin culture does not respect weak leaders.

We should tell Mexico we will seize a one kilometer wide strip of land along the border as a security zone and send in the army. Then negotiate terms to return it.

Time for a huge tariff on Mexican Beer and Tequila

Then I'll be reduced to drinking bourbon, ouzo, Irish whiskey and craft beer. On the bright side, maybe it will toughen me up facing such hardships.

Tax remittances and deport all illegal Mexicans first. Then send the Marines into northern Mexico to secure a buffer zone.

Fine. Shut it down and let Mexico deal with the tens of thousands of riffraff washed up against their northern border.

Says the guy that named his son after Che Guevara and facilitates the passage of irregular troops and illegals into the U.S.
