Patrick Caddell, the political pollster who helped send an obscure peanut farmer named Jimmy Carter to the White House, later became disillusioned with fellow Democrats and finally veered to advise supporters of Donald J. Trump, died on Saturday in Charleston, S.C. He was 68.
His death, from complications of a stroke, was confirmed by a colleague, Prof. Kendra Stewart of the College of Charleston.
While Mr. Caddell was considered instrumental in Mr. Carters victory, he also shared the blame for limiting him to a single term. He helped persuade the president to deliver a speech that was intended to inspirit the nation during an energy crisis and economic slump, but instead tarred Mr. Carter as a weakling who was unable to lift the country out of its malaise.
Instead, in 1980 voters chose Ronald Reagan, a Republican who promised a rosier vision that he would describe during his successful re-election campaign as morning again in America.

RIP Pat Caddell.
He will be missed.
After his Carter misadventure Pat Caddell became one of the good ones. He was usually far more conservative than most Republicans.
Sad. Respected this guy. Understood the populist movement & the rise of Trump.
I liked the guy. Seemed an honest sort. Always sure to give his passionate opinion instead of falling on party line. And in fact I appreciated his criticisms of his party ;D. Courageous man. Prayers for his family.
Always had great respect for him and would be certain to pay attention when he was on. May he be embraced warmly by his Creator.
I sure liked him
He and Powell were the Bolivian Brothers of the Carter White House
Toot on bra
Yes, RIP
Caddell was the one who broke the news to Carter before the 1980 election that all was lost
Too young. RIP, Mr. Caddell.
Last of the reasonable America loving Democrats. RIP Sir
Helped Carter into the White House? Quibble about his sanity.
Yes, he was on Fox a lot. Along with another dem pollster, Doug something, I think.
Yeah Doug Shoen
Actually, they spelled it inspirit - which is right.
Yet Bob Beckel lives!
Okay, I guess. I forgot this is the "high-falutin'" New York Crimes we're talking about. I think the word "inspire" would have been sufficient there, but probably not for the elite that read that Lobster wrap (too high class for regular fish, after all!)
Tim would have skewered Obama.
Remember, in those days, Carter was attempting to appeal to Conservatives (in 1976, at least). Caddell was not a left-winger.
They say that you can say at least one good thing about everyone. The one good thing I can say about this guy is that he gave us Ronald Reagan.
How sad. I liked his honesty.
That's still not a plus.
RIP...I am saddened to learn of this. He was one of the few who xould transcend partisan BS and address the issues with intellectual honesty.
