A North Carolina mom started serving a week-long jail sentence for having her daughter baptized, according to reports.
The 2016 baptism at St. Peters Catholic Church when the girl was 2 years old defied a judges order in a custody battle between unmarried couple, Kendra Stocks and Paul Schaaf, who are no longer together.

The baptism was for the child, not the parents
It sounds like the second, then she rubbed his nose in it on Facebook.
The judge should have given her more time than that for her stupidity in posting her willful contempt for his order on Facebook.
I think something is missing in this story
I’d say charity—but that wouldn’t be entirely accurate. I bet the kid is alright so far.
Didn’t they also teach you to read the article before commenting on it?
A heavenly crown for that mother!
Eternal salvation is worth temporary incarceration.
The article is totally unclear. If they’re both Catholics, he must have wanted his child baptized at some point. It sounds like it was just another arguing point between them. Maybe he wanted to be there for the occasion. Maybe he wanted some input into who the godparents were. They aren’t being mentioned in the article, but that’s a lot of what the ceremony is about, not just pouring water on the child which, agreed, could be done in the bathroom sink.
It’s hard to say what should be done. Divorced parents who use their child as a weapon against one another care less about the child’s state of mind than the other person’s. If I’d had a child in such a situation, I hope that I would have just talked endlessly about my own moral principles, as my grandmother did to me. And not railed against the principles of the other parent.
I don’t know of any Christian tradition that says a child inherits its faith, but someone else might know.
So where’s the punishment for all the women withholding the kids from visitation with dad that the court order says he gets?
Well, to be fair, not one baby was baptized in the Bible. It’s what you do on your own later to show your obedience to God. Public affirmation too.
Dad wanted to be there for the Baptism.
Thanks!
You’re right to the extent that the father should have been notified. Though I did read in the article that both parents are practicing Catholics, and so should have done this as soon after the child’s birth as possible. By not doing so they themselves both sinned according to the edicts of the Catholic faith. At least by that standard the child has now been baptized.
The mother is now paying the price of having disobeyed the judge’s order. But, again by Catholic theology, the parents may both be paying a divine price for bearing a child out of wedlock if they aren’t married, and/or for being separated regardless, especially where their child is concerned.
A sad situation to be sure.
He looks like an idiot.

What of the following article do you not understand?
The station quoted court records as saying Schaaf was
a practicing Catholic who attended Mass every week and
that the court had issued a ruling that gave him final say in all
legal custody decisions, including decisions concerning religion.
Totally was hyperbole. I certainly understood what you quoted from the article. So can you tell me who were the godparents and whether they were approved by the father? The question was about the motivation of the father in opposing the baptism if he was Catholic. I made a suggestion that the issue of godparents could be one reason.
Personally, I approve the mother being jailed. Court orders should have meaning. She violated it knowingly. There are consequences for bad actions. She’ll, hopefully, learn something from those consequences. It’s irrelevant what her actions were. Only that they were against the court order.
Why the aggression? That attitude is totally bizarre.
I spent many years working in a major hospital's ER and saw many, many memorable things....most of them sad.
Among my most vivid, powerful memories was watching one of our nurses baptize a little baby who was stillborn. It was about 30 years ago but I can see it in my mind like it happened this morning.
Why the aggression?

Not being aggressive. You said the article was unclear. I was
pointing out portions that maybe would help your understanding.
I didn’t mean to sound aggressive to you. My apologies.
Have a nice one.
The only reason a man sort of won is because a Christian stepped up to the plate to get her child baptised. If she had sacrificed her daughter at a wiccan ceremony, she'd probably be hailed as a heroine.
