How Bill Clinton Brought Back the 1911 Pistol

Gun control laws are pointless, and here's all you need to know about that: From the early 1990s until 2016, guns in circulation in the U.S. just about doubled, while violent crime was just about cut in half.

Worse (for the gun grabbers), gun control laws often lead to outcomes the gun grabbers never intended:

In that post AWB [the Bill Clinton-era "Assault Weapon Ban"] world, you could still buy a GLOCK or a Beretta, but why would you? Unless you had a source of pre-ban magazines you felt screwed and cheated. Why carry a full size pistol that could hold 15 to 17 rounds of 9x19mm when by law you were limited to 10 rounds max?

All of a sudden the 1911 became popular again. It was a full size pistol that all of a sudden was “slim” and carried a cartridge with more “knock down” power. Eight rounds of .45 didn’t look bad compared to 10 rounds of 9×19. In that post-1994 market, everyone and their brother began cranking out 1911s.

Seen the Clintonistas coming ...... stocked up on magazines for all my high capacity firearms. Still keep new spares for the next gun grabber administration. If you aren’t thinking about reloading, casting your own bullets, buying primers , brass and powder all properly stored and secured in rotational first in first out (FIFO) storage racks your a victim of future polidiots. Yeah I’m a fan of the 1911A1 and own a few but didn’t let Bubbafuco limit the few high capacity handguns I owned with clinton mags.

Think ahead, prepare for the worst and live life the best..... my opinion.

This is why I carry a 1911.

Having said that, the 1911 was stilld doing fine on it’s merits well before the ban. I would guess the 1911 is probably losing a little ground to more modern high capacity handguns but it is still a first class fighting gun.

Not really. I've always considered one of the biggest advantages the M1911A1 had was its ability to be broken down to almost every component [less the ejector, grip screw bushings and plunger spring tube without tools, though it's admittedly handy to have at least a GI cleaning kit screwdriver/combination tool available.

The Glock is nearly as convenient, but neither the G21 or G30 in .45 really fits my hand right, and of course Glocks don't have an external hammer.

But now the new Springfield Armory XDe does. When the .45 version comes out, I'll be taking a careful look at one VERY closely.

There's no trigger that can compare to a 1911. 😁

A one shot duel at 50 yards, I’d choose 9mm. I doubt anyone ever fought a duel at 50 yards before.

When stationed at Clark AFB in the Philippines I lived off base. My first purchase on the blackmarket there was two 1911A1’s with a dozen mags a couple hundred hounds of 230gr ball ammo. Next buy was a Model 12 Winchester and a hundred rounds of No# 4 Buck. All three firearms had “united states property” markings ...... never felt safer. Model 12 was a house gun an the 1911A1’s were for me and the wife to carry .

It was not the AWB but the obvious lack of stopping power of the wondernines that brought back the 1911 and its clones.

I carry a 10mm automatic and I laugh at your .45 vs 9mm debate. hahaha

If they only made a 10mm Magnum. Oh, wait: they do.
Well, if they'd only neck it down to .30 caliber and use jacketed .308 rifle bullets in it at AK-47 velocities. Oh, wait: They do.

We love our Kimber 1911s. Beautiful pistols. We are saving to purchase a brace of carry versions.

Ok you and are going to have a duel at 50 paces. There are two single shot pistols to choose from; a .45 ACP and a 9x19 mm parabellum. I’ll let you pick first. Which do you choose?

Oh look: someone intentionally going into ma life-or-death disagreement with a couple of single-shot pistol caliber weapons. There must be a better way for grown men to settle their disagreements....

I carry an XDS nearly every day. In .45 it’s got serious power. It’s my go to CC pistol.

Utterly reliable, accurate enough for its intended purpose, and simple to use.

Best,

The .30-40 Krag also had problems stopping drugged up Juramentados.

The Krag ballistics are not far below a 7.62x51 (.308), and used round nose bullets in the Philippines.

For a 220 grain bullet, the Krag 1974 fps.

For a 220 grain bullet, the .308 2226 fps.

It is about a 20% difference in energy, but the Krag has more than 5 times the energy than the .45 ACP.

The .38 long Colt was fired at 770 fps, about 200 foot pounds.

The 9X19 (many bullet weights) has typical energy of 365 foot pounds.

The .45 ACP has typical enery levels of 373 foot pounds.

Oh no! I carry a S&W Model 60. 5 shots of 38 Special.

And the only time I needed to draw a gun, it was a 22 LR revolver. Oddly enough, none of the other guys wanted to be first to take a 22 up the nose.

If I’m limited to one hit, I’d prefer a 45. Or a 44 Magnum. But I’m more likely to get more hits if I use a gun I find easy to control - which is why I shoot 38 Specials out of a gun that can handle 357 magnum.

I’d also prefer to have 100 rounds than 5, and a 20” barrel than a 2”...but the whole “conceal” thing kicks in. And I often carry an LCP just because it is so easy to carry.

The point of the article is partially valid. When people had to choose between 8 rounds of 45 versus 10 rounds of 9mm, the 45 started looking pretty good. But compared to 15 rounds of 9mm? Well...a lot will STILL carry a 45. That’s fine.

If I were making that choice, I’d go with “Anyone who deserves to be shot once deserves to be shot twice”. YMMV.

Nice pick. My equivalent M1911A1 lives in a GI M3 shoulder rig with two extra magazines on the shoulder strap, and that covers around 90% of my day-to-day. I built up a Glock 17 helmet case gun for Milady, happy enough with the results that I'm about to do it again for myself, probably as a G34. Still got my old faithful circa 1969 Browning GP and a couple of Walther/Mauser P.38s/P1s, and a Daewoo DP31 that I've come to like more than S&W M59s, though there's usually an M39 or two around as well.

Love 9mm for being cheap and easy/fun to shoot. Love .45 for getting the job done. Keep a Garand in the truck, and came up with a 1933 Mauser in 7,92x57mm that holds 4" groups at 300 meters off a sandbag with my tired old eyes.

Texas....2017

Long live Free Texas!

Nice ... love the 10mm. Have a few, Kimber, Glock 20, Glock 40 and a Rock Island Ultra FS HC...... My Glock 21 got a 50GI caliber conversion kit from gun crafters industries.... still about 900fps but 300gr’s. 50 caliber Glock .

Were I ever to be limited to one handgun I’d go with the Glock 20 in 10mm as Guncrafters 50GI conversion kit fits the 20 and 21. Not sure if anyone makes a .22 rimfire conversion for the 20/21 variants. Would be a good system, 10mm, 50GI and .22 rimfire.

Two of my favorites are a old HkP9s in 45 that is threaded for a suppressor. Fits my gemtech. The other is a Beretta 70S also threaded for my old Tactical Solutions Cascade can. Subsonic Eley .22 will get the ear wax out pretty good.
