Why Six Swing-State GOP Senators Are in Trouble – And How They Can Survive
Wall Street Journal ^ | 04/23/2016 | By Gerald F. Seib

Posted on 04/24/2016 7:02:39 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

In a complicated political season, nobody has more complications to worry about than the half-dozen Republican senators seeking re-election in tight, swing-state contests.

Those senators–hailing from Illinois, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and North Carolina—are being buffeted by big forces largely out of their control as they try to hang onto their seats. Their fate will determine whether Republicans keep control of the Senate, where they currently have a 54-46 advantage.

The predicament of these GOP senators comes into clearer focus in the latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, completed just last week, which helps crystallize three big complications they face:

–The Trump factor.

These Senate candidates are trying to figure out what it would mean to run for re-election in a party whose presidential nominee, with the face and voice that would dominate national attention, would be Donald Trump.

The issue arises, of course because of the stratospheric levels of negative feelings toward Mr. Trump nationwide. In the new WSJ/NBC News poll, 65% of voters said they had negative feelings toward Mr. Trump. That includes 79% of Latinos and 75% of younger voters aged 18 through 34, two audiences where the GOP had been hoping to improve over its performance four years ago.

The question for GOP Senate candidates is whether such negative feelings could pull down other Republicans with spots down the ballot. It’s a complicated question because Mr. Trump might at the same time draw out to the polls, to the benefit of Republicans, more white working-class voters, many of whom see him as something of a potential savior.

I want to see Jim Reuben primary the John McCain-Linda Graham lap-poodle, Kelly Ayotte!

Could be more of a message to McConnell for saying, ‘give us the Senate and we will show we can lead’.

McConnell has proved he can’t.

The Republican majority is even more feckless than the Republican minority.

Here's what I got from Kelly Ayotte this morning:

"Friday morning I joined university officials, law enforcement and survivor advocates for a roundtable on campus sexual assault legislation at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) in Manchester. They provided valuable insight about a bipartisan bill I helped introduce, called the Campus Accountability and Safety Act (CASA) that builds on Title IX to ensure that these crimes are properly investigated and increases transparency on campuses in New Hampshire and across the country. The sad reality is that sexual assaults are an underreported crime, and that is due in large part to the fact that survivors don't believe they will receive the support they need to come forward. CASA addresses this issue by partnering survivors of sexual assault with a confidential advisor to help ensure they have the support they need when they come forward. I am working with my colleagues to get CASA through the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee and onto the floor so we can take action to address this issue."

Notice the use of the term "survivors of sexual assault", a completely fictitious feminist neologism which includes crime victims (rapist convicted), people who are confused about recent events in their lives, liars, fabulists, and the mentally ill.

It's fortunate for the Republican Majority™ that Ayotte is running against Maggie Hassan, but if she wins, she's going to do it without my support.

Trump is the least of their problems. If the GOP loses the senate its their own fault. They have done nothing to represent their voting base.

As odious as some of these gopers are, they are better than the Elizabeth Warren clones that would replace them.

The best way to get rid of them is to primary them, like they’re doing to mccaine, ryan, etc.

If the dems get the senate, Chuck Schumer is the majority leader. Then what does president Trump get accomplished?

Seib’s analysis is flawed because it only considers Trump’s negatives on a stand alone basis. When comparing his negatives, one on one, with the goblin queen’s he is only slightly behind.

I heard on John Batchelor the other night that Trump only needs to gain 6 points, in the head to head popularity poll against the witch, to gain the lead.

I believe once he disposes of his spoiler opponents he will gain far more than 6 points.

In Wisconsin Sen. Johnson ran as a backer of the tea party only later to attack them along with Mitch and the GOPe.

My guess that if the Democrats win the senate, President Trump switches parties and becomes a Democrat. It’s where his friends are and I think he’d feel more comfortable there anyway. He already has the riff down about how unreasonable those rascally Republicans are.

You are asking the wrong people that question.

The Trump supporters have tried to kick
that football one too many time already.

Without a filibuster proof senate, nothing can truly be done to overturn Obama laws passed.

B$ just ignore them like Obama ignores every law he doesn't like.

The house holds the purse strings. The GOP leadership has never once opposed any action by the Democrats. The unelected bureaucrats have had unlimited resources to continue destroying our Republic. It is well within the power of Congress to stop these agencies by denying them the resources. They haven’t even tried and we are sick of cowardly, lying excuses.

I live near Chicago, and I won’t vote for Sen. Kirk. Here are some of his latest interest group ratings: Planned Parenthood, 100%; NEA, 100%; John Birch Society, 35%; and Gun Owners of America, 0%. He wants to give amnesty to illegal aliens.

I’m the campaign manager of Chad Koppie, the Constitution Party’s U.S. Senate candidate. Unlike Kirk, Chad is pro-life, pro-gun rights, anti-illegal alien, pro-fairtax, and pro-spending cuts. We hope that the liberal vote will split among Kirk, Duckworth, and Summers (of the Green Party), helping Chad win with 25%. He needs to get at least 25,000 petition signatures between March 29 & June 20, so we need a lot of volunteers and donors. Please read his site, www.chadkoppie.com.

Question is are they RINOS or Conservatives? I know I’ll vote any RINO out at federal or state level. Have my sights on my State Rep RINO and a Conservative will get my vote if one challenges her.
