CHICAGO (Reuters) - U.S. Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump on Saturday blamed organized "thugs" for protests that shut down his Chicago rally and said the incident had "energized America."

Trump, who will be at a campaign rally in Dayton, Ohio, on Saturday, canceled the Chicago event on Friday after it turned chaotic, with scuffles breaking out between protesters and backers of the real estate magnate.

"The organized group of people, many of them thugs, who shut down our First Amendment rights in Chicago, have totally energized America!" Trump said on Twitter.

The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects freedom of speech and assembly. The Chicago rally came ahead of five primary elections on Tuesday, including contests in Ohio and Illinois.

What about that bastion of tolerance in 1968 Chicago (the Dumbocrats completely unbound)?

I was waiting for him to say this.

Cruz, what did you do? you broke my heart. If you were here, I’d kiss you on the lips and seal the deal.

(either means complete love and respect OR you’re dead to me among old world Italians. I HATE it when my old uncles kiss me on the lips!!!! That tradition dies with them.)

you wanted power so much more than you wanted to do the right thing.

what a shame.

Cruz blamed the protesters before Trump blamed them.

The Chicago protest and Ted Cruz’s reaction is a turning point in the campaign in my humble opinion. Like a few other long time freepers who have been Ted Cruz holdouts, I am now moving even closer to jumping on the trump train.

You have the right to protest not disrupt an event. The Chicago police blew it last nite.

It was CLEARLY a planned and organized and coordinated “action” by the Soros-funded anti-American left. We should expect, and be prepared for, more of this through November.

Protesters doing what they are paid to do (SEIU, MoveOn, etc.) are not the problem.

Decent, middle-class folks are the problem for not bowing and reciting mea culpas.

Now, pardon me while I check my White privilege.

Black Lives Matter and George Soros are to Blame.

Not Trump.

Trump should start asking these BlackLivesMatter clowns if they believe 58% unemployment is what they want for black youths. He should ask if they like the current system. Has Obama and the democrats done so much for them?

He needs to turn this around. The best strategy is to ask them if they like it the way it is. Ask them if the want real opportunity.

He should use the opportunity to reverse things on them. It may actually cause a small percentage of them to even think.

Here is the one-way street of leftist violence in America.

If hundreds or thousands of Trump supporters showed up at a Bernie rally, got into a few fistfights and shut it down...

Who gets the blame?

I think last night maybe just sealed the nominations for Trump.

It is a Wellstone Memorial type moment.

Voters are not going to be impressed Cruz/Kaisch/Rubio rushed right out to side with the rioters.
