I just got back from the North Dallas Wal-Mart just off the George W. Bush freeway and Marsh rd, consistently had 5 cent .22 ammunition when I visited my Daughter in October. When I checked on 29 November, there were five boxes of Winchester copper-plated .22 LR, 333 round boxes for $14.97. That translates to 4.5 cents a cartridge. I suspected that it was a fluke.
Today, at 11:30 on 11 December, I checked again. This time the shelves were full of .22 at Wal-Mart, including quite a few bulk packs. The Remington ammo today was 4.9 cents a round; the Winchester ammo was 4.5 cents a round; and 4.9 cents a round. The Federal Auto Match was 5.22 cents a round. The CCI Standard velocity was about 7 cents a round. The box numbers and prices were: 12 boxes of 525 rounds of Remington, $27.57, 10 boxes of 222 rds of Winchester $10.97, 6 boxes of 325 rds of Federal Auto Match, 16.97, 4 boxes, 555 rds Winchester, $24.77. At least 30 50 rd boxes of CCI standard velocity at $3.47 a box. The 3 box limit per customer per day was still in effect.
Perhaps this is another fluke. Maybe not. I have expected the .22 ammunition bubble to last until a Republican president is elected; but maybe President Obamaâs ability to scare the ammo buying public is finally fading. Maybe Donald Trump is having an effect on enough voters that they feel a bit more confident about the future. The .22 ammunition bubble has been primarily a political one.

Well, I’ll be!
I was looking in WM (VA) yesterday. Zip.
...or maybe Wal Mart management is finally cracking down on its employees conducting out the back door gouge sales of its ammo.
There hasn’t been anything but a few boxes of 60’s in East Texas for over three years.
I wish that was my Wal Mart. I like the CCI stuff. The Winchester 555 and 325 - I have enough of but it is pretty dirty ammo coming out of the box. As for the Remington Golden, my 22 semis don’t like it a bit. Dirty and doesn’t feed well IMO.
or more likely, the ammo manufacturer is working around the clock making the valuable stuff
many think it is more valuable than gold
Here in NE FL our “local” WM has pretty much quit stocking both guns and ammo, claiming they can’t get any. I suspect a anti-gun store manager. In other news, the whole store is a mess too.
I was at Field and Stream in SW Ohio looking for .22 WMR last week.
They said they haven’t had any for a year.
They only had two rows on a pallet of .22. It was a full pallet the day before, they said. They had been out of .22 for a week before that one pallet came in.
Plenty of 20 gauge shells though. $5.99 a box.
For the first time in my life, I now know people who have purchased enough ammo to make them (more-or-less) comfortable with their inventory for a very long time. They are "saturated," so to speak.

OK then
Interesting. I was so frustrated a couple of years ago at the difficulty of locating .22LR that I purchased several thousand Federal rounds via ArmsList. I’ll have to swing by my local Walmart to see if the drought is finally over. Sooner or later the manufacturers would catch up to the demand. The market will eventually respond if not thwarted by government policy!
Whoops, somebody forgot to control the flow.
I went to Cabela’s in Allen, Tx last night, and there were at least 10-15 people in line at the gun counter. Lots more were browsing the ammo, gun cleaning aisles, and accessories. Can’t imagine why.
Hasn’t happened in Richmond, yet.
I go through the ammo section whenever I’m there, hoping to get lucky.
I know why people are hoarding rimfire, you can’t make your own, unlike centerfire.
I think the ammo hoarders have all maxed out their CC’s.
They will still try to unload their stash at gun shows and online to the uninformed.
Say no to wrong prices on .22 ammo.
I found some of those Remington 555 round bulk boxes at my local WM. Picked up two of them. Didn’t really need to add to my current supply, but what the heck?
Fleet Farm in the Mpls. area also had .22 in bulk (330 pack) and several CCI and Winchester 100 packs on Thursday and Friday.
I went to the local Atwood’s last week after what happened in California, and expected the people to be stacked three or four deep at the gun counter.
There was no one there except me and one other person looking at guns, and they even had several AR-15 variants on the shelves! No crowds. I did get a box of Remington .22, but I prefer Winchester. Get what you can, when you can!
Well, I have many, many pounds of ammo, and would willingly trade even-up, pound-for-pound. All in the spirit of serving my fellow man, of course.
I am about to make my first firearms purchase ever (12 guage pump for the home), but I may have to get something in a 22 just to take advantage of the cheap prices.
