It is hard to beat the Marlin or Savage .22 autos for inexpensive versatility.
The Ruger 10-22 is a favorite of a lot of people.
There are also many .22 pistols that are great fun and useful.
Best value for the money, in my view, is the Marlin model 60. Can be had brand new for about $170. On the used market, can usually be got for a little over $100.
