The spectacular rise of Donald Trump as leading presidential candidate should at last force Republicans in Washington to face the chronic ineffectiveness of their party: rank and file Republicans are turning to the Donald because he, unlike the party establishment, seems energetic, articulate, and determined to get something done. They have so long despaired of a party leadership that is inarticulate, somnolent, and inept that they are not deterred by the fact that Trump is dangerously unpredictable. The problem is not an insufficiently conservative party, as some conservatives think; a two-party system will always have a broad spectrum of viewpoints in each, and the mix in the Republican Party is about what one would expect at any given time. Conservatives who make this complaint are only narrowing support for the move to make a much-needed change in the leadership, and giving bungling Republican leaders an alibi for their failure.
The party¹s problem is not that it is led in the wrong direction, but that it is barely led at all. And that¹s because of a persistent Republican tendency to pick leaders by seniority, not leadership ability. When a leadership post is vacant, Republicans don¹t ask: who can advocate most persuasively for the party, who would be the best tactician and strategist, who could best forge a consensus among the party¹s disparate elements. They ask only: whose turn is next? And that condemns them to incompetent leaders like Denny Hastert, Bob Dole, or John Boehner -- people so lacking in eloquence, energy and foresight that it would never have occurred to anyone to think of them had the right questions been asked.

“...they are not deterred by the fact that Trump is dangerously unpredictable.”
That is an odd thing to maintain. I have seen Trump on TV over the years saying the same thing that he is saying now. Circumstances usually cause a reasonable person to adjust their thinking.
Yes We Have!!
They lead themselves to permanent irrelevancy playing the part of The Comeback Kid who should stay home with his Momma!
This has been building for years....the DC set, from the consultants to the congressional staffers are beside themselves! Their whole world is falling apart quickly and they just dont get it.

Unlike the republicans who ran in 2014 promising to stop Obama?
This literature professor from California
is obviously an Obama supporter.
The conservative base knows that the GOP has been an existential traitor on illegal immigration.
That, plus his great communications skills and the party’s perfidy, is the cause of Trump’s success.
We are living with a president who has proved to be dangerously predictable - if it’s anti-American, bad for the individual American citizens. illegal and unconstitutional, he’s for it and DOING it. I’ll take my chances on Mr. Trump as opposed to Otreason & the GOPe who has enabled Otreason almost every step of his evil way. While I may end up disagreeing with some of Trumps methods, I have no doubt where his allegiance lies.
Eloquence? If you can't make the case to stop the Federal Government that has declared war on American Citizens, you can't even qualify as an empty suit.
Good article!
“Change throughout the leadership is needed — House, Senate, party — but at the very least, the party must equip itself with a commanding voice and strategic intelligence in its most important national office: the Speakership. Not at the next election, not at the next convenient moment immediately. Then watch the Trump problem begin to diminish.”
While this would be helpful, I personally think it’s too late. The base has all but made their choice. I’m not a Trump fan but if he is nominated and elected, one would hope that there is a real house cleaning afterwards in the House, Senate and the RNC but to me it is doubtful. I have little hope for my country at this point. There is simply too much wrong and too little time to correct it.
I think Trump is very predictable. He’s a patriot and I think what he says is what he will do.
Let me suggest something for the more spiritually minded: if someone is “unpredictable” why not trust the nation to God and let HIM direct our leader? The Bible shows us that even the enemies of Israel would allow themselves to be used by God-—sometimes more than the Israelites themselves. We have been putting our faith in predictable men too long.
I think Trump can be a huge force in the house and senate calling out the RINOs and making them bend to his will.
The more the GOPe resists Barack Obama now, the more the wind would go out of the sails of the insurrectionists (of whom I count myself one) and the less would be the perceived need for Donald Trump.
This strategy is no doubt one which the Democrats are praying for because they must do something to activate their base and move the discussion away from the appalling record of Barack Obama and onto a false issue, especially one having to do with women's rights. But we all know the Democrats don't pray and, anyway, this prayer will never be answered by the likes of Boehner and McConnell who will never shut the government down as long as they can keep it open.
Not only have Boehner and McConnell undermined the country, undermined their constituents, undermined the Republican Party, they have also effectively wrecked their own Republican establishment. To alter the old joke, it is like watching your country being driven over the cliff with Boehner and McConnell driving and riding shotgun.
“Thinker”
You keep using that word... I don’t think it means what you think it means.
No.
We really want somebody who will JUST DO THE RIGHT THING.
For a change.
that is a great analysis. to carry it one step further, the lack of leadership and apparent direction in the Republican Party is perceived on Free Republic as being Democrat to the point there are no Republicans, just Rinos.
Hey gOpee ... Trump is winning because the voters are not deterred from ousting you because of the fact that you are dangerously Predictable as 0bama butt boys.
“Unlike the republicans who ran in 2014 promising to stop Obama?”
What they have yet to acknowledge to themselves, is that is their single biggest downfall: Promising to stop obama and then actually turn around and support his every move.
It what makes them true RINO’s, backstabbers, dishonest and traitorous.
Much of the public sees this.
Go Trump, Go!
