Second Amendment groups are accusing the gun control lobby of putting law-abiding owners of firearms in danger by urging people to call the police on anyone carrying a gun in public.

As more states relax rules about open-carrying of guns, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence has taken to social media to urge the public to assume gun-toters are trouble, and to call the cops on anyone they feel may be a threat.

“Every single instructor of mine has advised that “open-carry” means visible target.

It defies even the most basic Art of War concept of concealment and reveals your “fog of war” to everybody.

Same with those stupid idiotic gun stickers on your truck/car.”

BINGO! Be prepared...but also be the gray man (or woman), the person who is not noticed. Sticking out may stroke the egos of some people, but it isn’t a very smart thing to do when matters of life and death are at issue.

“In Texas, open carry begins on January 1. I’ll be interested to see how many actually do it.”

Not me. I don’t want to be the first guy shot at the local Stop ‘N’ Rob when my wife gets a hankering for ice cream at midnight. To me the ONLY utility of that law is to prevent me getting a misdemeanor for unintentionally showing my carry piece. YMMV, etc., but you and I clearly agree.

“They don’t get to pick and choose which calls they respond to.”

Exactly. Now how they act when they DO respond (and respond they will, because they must - its their job) - well, that’s another matter. But be careful of provoking officers when they do respond, because it is both a stupid and dangerous thing to do, and it also does not help our case.

IMHO, anyone who is swatted like this needs to act with the utmost of care and respect, being fully in compliance with the officers. Once they have figured out what happened, and that you are no threat to anyone, politely ask them to investigate and/or arrest the person who called it in. It won’t happen the first time, but if that happens 5 or 10 times and the story gets into the papers/internet, then a lot of pressure will be brought to bear to prosecute this animals for filing false reports and wasting scarce police resources.

Just a few months back a concealed carry holder attending some event his daughter was taking part in at an Ann Arbor area school had police called because he was openly armed. (our quirk is that concealed carry holders can carry in schools but must carry openly)

Police arrived and ask him to go out in the hallway where they questioned him for a few minutes after which he returned to his seat still armed. Naturally this sent the liberals off the rails and the school board has since voted that a gun in school is considered a disturbance which is an acceptable reason to call police. There is a lawsuit pending now and the school district is going to lose and cost taxpayers money.

In contrast, when I was a teenager in the early 80s we carried guns openly in my little hometown and nobody batted an eye. We walked to hunting grounds around town and often stopped at the grocery store with a shotgun or rifle slung across our backs.

How those who engage call in a SWATTING any different than physically holding a gun at someone’s head?

The only difference is that you are having someone ELSE do it.

Laws need to address this and put people away for a long time, or if they lead to deaths of others, they need to be executed.
