Trump is forcing the country to have that “honest conversation about race” and some people aren’t happy about it.

But, Trump is saying what most conservatives are thinking...the country has drifted to the left under the current spate of Repubs (yeah, the Repubs). He likely does not believe he would be elected, but he has a bully pulpit now and is the lightning rod for the left. He also is informing the other candidates what agenda items are hot, needed, and better be included without them needing to send up trial balloons. I love the guy’s brashness and there is a great strategic value.

Thank you for not reading the article.

Your point, which is 100% valid, was conceded in the article......which you are afraid to confront.

I had a conversation earlier with a Trump supporter. I couldn’t get the person to answer a single direct question about Trump’s claims/plans. Instead, I received a lot of “Cruz is incompetent...Trump is a leader...we need a leader.”

Let’s see how this goes.

If the others are afraid to talk about illegal immigration, then I’m afraid they will cave if elected and ignore it the way they have always done. We need someone who will actually act on their issues.

The most troubling defense is this claptrap that he “tells it like it is.” Well, first of all, no he doesn’t. He tells it the way you want to hear it, which is an entirely different thing. He is like William Jennings Bryan, only his cross of gold has an all-you-can-eat buffet under it, and looks remarkably like a capital “T.”

My misgivings about Trump stated to a 'T'! As much as I enjoy the Donald show, I don't trust him as far as I could throw him...but I DO admire the way he's stuck to his guns so far.

I just think Cruz, for example, gives us the same willingness to take on those very groups - and in fact, has done so for his entire adult life...something Trump cannot say.

Trump is getting the Ronald Reagan treatment by the same folks. Cruz is my man. But he currently has 1/4 the support. How many non voters are his reality show viewers? That number is large. If he brings them in, landslide.

If Trump endorses a primary challenger, the incumbent will probably lose.

My take is watch and wait. He may flame out. If not, ending the illegal flood alone will make him a grew President.

Nah, just having a little fun before actual decisions are made. It will help shake some other positions out of the trees.

I understand Trump may not be a true conservative, but I believe he loves this country...he is pro life, pro military/veteran, pro jobs, pro American, and is NOT beholden to the special interest groups. What am I missing? And yes, Ted Cruz is a very good candidate, who stood up during the healthcare debate....but nothing happened, did it? Trump got Obama to show his fake birth certificate AND has opened up the immigration issue wide open. His press conference with the victims’s parents was epic and heartfelt. I loved it. So if I am being fooled, so be it.

Let’s see how this goes.

Sadly, it's going exactly as predicted. Only one Trump supporter (and by the way, I support his being in the race now, but not for the nomination) has been honest and intellectual. The rest seem to think Jonah Goldberg is the point. I guess the old saying is right, small minds focus on personalities while great minds focus on ideas.....

Illegal immigration is a compound problem...I can see why many are on board with what appears to be a singular issue...

Truth to power or some such comes to mind...but directed at all Americans, not just the idiots in DC.

Trump, historically, is a social liberal. He seems to be conservative on immigration, and by implication, law enforcement. He has not done anything to convince me that he will be a fiscal conservative, as I think he will throw money at problems. I think he will be conservative on national security and foreign policy, but have no proof of that.

He is a mixed bag, like many other candidates. I don’t know that there is one perfect conservative candidate out there, but there definitely are a few that are more conservative than Trump.

I think they are being conned and played. ,,

Of course we are. The question is really which con artist do we vote for? We pretty much know what a Bush (and McConnell and Bohner) will do but with Trump we have an inkling of hope that things could be different. So, its not if we get conned. It is how we get conned.

As Lincoln said about Grant: "He fights."

As opposed to the more measured, thoughtful, conservative General McClelland.

You Platonist conservatives are looking for the perfect candidate who agrees with you perfectly, in all issues, and prioritizes them exactly as you do.

It's silly. This is war.

These lib commies are trying to obliterate us and the USA. Get real, and get real quickly.

What am I missing

A lot, much of which is in the article, which you too refuse to read and confront. Your point about Cruz is totally absurd too, but I'll not go into that now.

Now, now... if it wasn’t for Lucianne’s help and Buckley’s diminished judgement Jonah would have had to get a real job instead of wrecking National Review.

Thank you for being predictably unintelligent about this. Rich Lowry is not running for Prez, and neither is Goldberg. Lowry, btw, wrote a nice piece about Trump - so you have egg on your face on that.

Why don’t you put down your fan boy hat and join the discussion of issues and ideas at the adult table.
