Meet your newest most favorite celebrity, Vince Vaughn. An interviewer for the British version of GQ decided to ask about the European Left’s favorite tongue-clucking topic of American culture, gun ownership. Rather than pander to the groupthink, Vaughn gave them the rhetorical double-barrel, and even offered a thinly veiled slam at the governing elite across the pond (via LoganSix on Twitter):
On the American right to own a gun:
“I support people having a gun in public full stop, not just in your home. We don’t have the right to bear arms because of burglars; we have the right to bear arms to resist the supreme power of a corrupt and abusive government. It’s not about duck hunting; it’s about the ability of the individual. It’s the same reason we have freedom of speech. It’s well known that the greatest defence against an intruder is the sound of a gun hammer being pulled back. All these gun shootings that have gone down in America since 1950, only one or maybe two have happened in non-gun-free zones. Take mass shootings. They’ve only happened in places that don’t allow guns. These people are sick in the head and are going to kill innocent people. They are looking to slaughter defenceless human beings. They do not want confrontation. In all of our schools it is illegal to have guns on campus, so again and again these guys go and shoot up these f***ing schools because they know there are no guns there. They are monsters killing six-year-olds.”
At that point, the interviewer followed up by asking whether guns should be allowed in schools — a position often ridiculed by people who forget that many schools had gun clubs in past decades without incident. Vaughn ups the ante by pointing out that the private schools to which the governing class send their own children largely have their own armed security:
On whether guns should be allowed in schools:
“Of course. You think the politicians that run my country and your country don’t have guns in the schools their kids go to? They do. And we should be allowed the same rights. Banning guns is like banning forks in an attempt to stop making people fat. Taking away guns, taking away drugs, the booze, it won’t rid the world of criminality.”
There isn’t much to add to this, except that Vaughn’s arguments will be certain to grab attention, if not massive amounts of condemnation from the cognoscenti, especially in Hollywood. Vaughn seems passionate enough about this not to care, and he’s too significant to marginalize. Vaughn seems to have kept a fairly low political profile, but the excerpt from the upcoming interview would put him on the libertarian-conservative area of the American political spectrum, and it will be fascinating to see whether Vaughn cares to extend his thoughts on these matters.
Until then, we can just enjoy Vaughn’s embrace of liberty and common sense, at least up until the time we start banning forks as a mandate of ObamaCare.
20 years ago I was sent to a “leadership training” exercise in Europe for my company
Following some of the lessons about effective communication and presentation - we had to do an extemporaneous speech about something like “what is very special about the place you come from, and why?”
My topic was - I love the fact that Americans can own guns. As many as you want and of all sizes. Shows that the Government really has to trust the people.
The Europeans there dropped their jaws like I had stripped naked and did an interpretive dance. Its probably also part of the reason I’m no longer at that company.
Never would have guessed his perspective. I’m always a bit suspicious when they espouse a conservative opinion, but this sounds pretty legit. Wish more people in his crowd used common sense.
Oh, don’t ok buddy me.
Thanks Kaslin.
Shut up and sing.
I’m not interested in liberal actors spouting their rhetoric. I’m not interested in this, either. What has Vince done that I should give credence to his political views?
His celebrityhood means nothing to me. His opinions mean just as much.
He looks a little like the guy who plays “mayhem” in those Allstate insurance commercials - but I think that guy’s name is Dean Winter.
Nice...some Europeans are not the typical statist.
While my general approach to the opinions of celebrities is based on my philosophy that “They play other people for a living, why would I take them seriously?”, it’s nice to know that a few of them aren’t as stupid as Susan Sarandon, Liam Neeson, Sean Penn, et al.
Actually, Mr Vaughn has risen several notches in my estimation for having some ‘little grey cells’.
About the same as you except I know who Vince Vaughn is..............
Los Angeles Times soils its panties: http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/gossip/la-et-mg-vince-vaughn-guns-in-schools-true-detective-british-gq-20150601-story.html
He has one of the sexiest voices in show business. And now, he turns out to be smart too!
I LOVE those Mayhem commercials! Often they are much better than the tv show on the air! LOL
Did that extend to Ronald Reagan and Charlton Heston?
While from an intellectual purity standpoint I want to agree with what you are saying, from a practical politics perspective, we need all the help we can get from those in the public eye, and should welcome the help.
