Oops: US Close-Air Support Bomb Doesn't Fit on the F-35

The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter will not receive the software package required to operate the Pentagon’s top close-air support bomb until 2022, according to military.com.

The article also stated that the JSF office already had discovered earlier that the precision-guided air-dropped Small Diameter Bomb II (SDB II) does not fit onto Joint Strike Fighter Marine Corps variant without modifications to the aircraft’s weapons bay.

Yet the Department of Defense will wait until the F-35 B (the Marine Corps variant of the F-35) reaches initial operability before modifying the F-35’s armament bay, since the weapon will be useless without the right software package.

Hmmmm. Did we have an error in converting metrics to inches? And, the mods will only cost how much? Could the Warthog carry the SDB II. I mean hell it's SMALL diameter. Sure wish I'd held on to my LM stock.

You could strap a side by side washer/dryer on an A-10 and it would still fly.

They want to retire the A10 because it is too effective at killing their Muzzie buddies. This is not a joke, it is just one more effort to weaken our military. If they retire all the A10’s there will be a lot of Marines dying because of it.

First of all, the SBDII is intended to enter service about 2 years from now...it’s not even completed all of its testing. I guess no aircraft should be built while waiting for a bomb?

http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2015/03/04/new-small-diameter-bomb-doesnt-fit-inside-marines-f-35b/

Out of this note the date when development started and that of the FIRST “flight”.

IOW...the F35 was already finalizing design when the SDBII was just beginning design and it’s first “flight” was after the F35’s were already being delivered.

There’s a A-10 squadron near me. During the summer they love to go bad-assing up and down the Lake Huron coastline at about 200’ .God, I love those planes!

Can the A-10 carry the SDB II internally? Does the F-35 need to carry that bomb internally?

This whole article is an apples to oranges comparison. The SDB was originally pitched to fit inside the weapons bay on F-22. This SDB II evidently has some kind of triple guidance package that up until this date had never been fielded. I don't know how you can build a 250 lb bomb that can't fit in a bay built for 2000 lb. JDAM., but I don't remember these arguments when F-22 came out. American air to air weapon development has been limited to the weapons bay on the F-22 for a long time, when we could use a longer stick weapon against emerging Russian and Chinese weapons.

LOL. Yep. Maybe he's here? I wonder how many victims of the Great Purge of 2007 signed up anew under different names?

Mr. Secretary. You mean to tell us that there is “another” failure of the F-35? I am shocked.

The machine is a joke and it would be funny if it were not so costly or badly needed.

The thing is a POS.
