MINOCQUA (WAOW) -It is spring in Wisconsin but in some parts of the Northwoods, lakes are still covered with ice, delaying the fishing season.
"We're excited that we can feel that spring is on the horizon," said Kim Baltus, the Minocqua Chamber of Commerce executive director. But on Lake Minocqua there still is ice on the majority of the center parts of the lake."
The ice kept some anglers from fishing last weekend - the opening of inland lakes season.
"We need the ice to go away, so people can get out there and get the walleyes and all kinds of fish," said Jim Stewart, owner of Rollie and Helen's Musky Shop.

Glowbull Smarming will be here soon to take care of that.
Most of the lakes around Duluth were open on Saturday walleye opener. Some small chunks were floating around but that’s it. It was also warm which is unusual for a Mn fishing opener
Lake Superior still has quite a bit of ice
I hate global warming. It makes the weather so cold. /s
That’s what happens when the climate gets disrupted. /s
We just returned from 4 days near Lake City, Michigan. The lake was cold, but so beautiful.
I must say, we had a lovely little trip. Nice people, beautiful scenery, such warm hospitality.
The one thing that surprised me was the number of dead deer on the sides of the road. What happens to them? Do they get removed eventually, or are they cleaned up by scavengers? We were curious about this.
The dead deer will be removed from along the more heavily traveled roads but they also decompose or scavengers eat them pretty quickly in a normal year.
This year they’re just sitting in the fridge.
Ice on lakes in May = Global warming? Did that lake have ice on it in July in the 1990s?
Here in Denver, on the 12th of May, we’re shoveling A FOOT OF “GLOBAL WARMING” from our walks and driveways.
Waow!!!
Maybe they’ll thaw just in time for the first freeze in the fall. North Texas should have near freezing temps tomorrow morning .unheard of cold temperatures for this late date as the cold front that gave Denver snow on Mother’s Day arrives in Texas.
used to bear hunt the spring season in western Ontario (Vermillion Bay) inthe ‘70’s and early ‘80’s. Go through International Falls and see chunks of ice floating in the river, on up in Canada it was usually in the 50’s and low 60’s temperatures. We had no touble fishing at any time I was there.
I was going to say, anyone see what’s going on in CO, WY, and NE today? Serious, serious global warming. I know my cousin in Denver is cussing...
This summer in the southern hemisphere has been one of the hottest in record.
And 2014 is now the coldest year in recorded US history.
The previous records, set in 1899 and 1912 fell in the last couple of weeks.
Boys back in the UP tell me that huntin season next year will have nothing to do at all with deer. The wolves and winter took care of what was left of them.
My cousin lives in Eagle River....it’s up there. Two weeks ago he posted a pic of him ice fishing. 30 inches thick.! It was in mid 50s though so he was wearing shorts so not to get over heated.
Just put a can of beer on the ice.....preferably Old Milwaukee. The Muskie will look up and see that yummy beer and crash through the ice to get it. You’ve seen those sharks down by South Africa jumping to catch seals? Well, you haven’t lived until you’ve seen a 40 foot Muskie crash through the ice to grab some suds!
I guess global warming is just for the summers. Seems if the weather is extreme in one hemisphere, it’s extreme in the other also. We could probably call it global cooling, just depends on where and when you are.
