In the 22 years that Swami Durga Das has managed New Yorks River Fund Food Pantry, he has never seen hunger like this. Each Saturday, hundreds of hungry people descend on the pantrys headquarters, an unassuming house on a residential block. The first people arrive around 2 am, forming a line that will wrap around the block before Das even opens his doors.
Each week theres new people, Das told MSNBC.com. The numbers have just skyrocketed.
The new clients are diverseworking people, seniors, single mothersbut many of them share something in common: they represent the millions of Americans who fell victim to food insecurity when the Great Recession hit in 2009, but didnt benefit from the economic recovery.
And the worst may be yet to come.
Food activists expect a Hunger Cliff on November 1, when automatic cuts to food stamp benefits will send a deluge of new hungry people to places like the River Fund Food Pantry, which are already strained.
I thought we were busy now; I dont know what it will be like then, because all of those people getting cut will definitely be accessing a pantry, said Das. It definitely will be a catastrophe.(continued)

What F’ing hunger cliff?
Granted the death of the American economy, opportunity and the growth of a communist leaning America will starve everyone; but a cliff due to food stamps?
If there is a repeal of food stamps as there should be of Obamacare, I have not yet heard of it?
Redistribution of wealth through social programs and working in the gray markets doing jobs that don’t make you pay your taxes.
Just wait till folks discover their new healthcare premiums are higher than their rent or mortgage payments.
It’s not hunger. It’s FREE FOOD!
Biggest thing that stood out to me was the line..."but didnt benefit from the economic recovery." What economic recovery?
The Employment Center stands empty at the top of the Hunger Cliff.
Work. Buy your own food. No one who works will starve in America.
This is just another liberal push-piece for selected interests vying for more government money, undeserved sympathy, and a call for more 'government' help. They can bark it up another tree and send the illegals at their doors away.
They all have cell phones and flat screen TVs?
The fact is they are not starving. If anyone wants to convince me of ‘hungry’ show me some emaciated bodies in the morgue. There aren’t any.
With the amount of “help” available in multiple levels of local, state, federal programs it is impossible for anyone to “starve” in America.....
To be obese....easy...
Good one...kudos!
“With the amount of help available in multiple levels of local, state, federal programs it is impossible for anyone to starve in America...To be obese....easy...”
That’s right; what other country’s underclass has a diabetes epidemic?
Imagine the total graft when you add county, state, federal, Obamaphones (by way of our cellphone bills), free school meals (can't say lunch anymore), etc. I helped a friend at a local church with a charity furniture/household goods program. I had to quit when I saw the attitudes of most of the clients. Didn't show up for appointments, left furniture on sidewalks and threw items out because they deemed them not good enough.
Where there are thousands of stray cats, dogs, millions of pigeons, rats and raccoons along with other good to eat critters.
They must be starving. Obesity among the poor is running rampant/leftist think
Yep, I've watched the crowd around the city mission here at chow time. Nice cars parking or letting people out, and it has the atmosphere of a movie getting ready to start.
I told a couple who was panhandling with a dog that they couldn’t be to hungry because if they were they would have eaten their dog. The look on their faces was priceless.
