It seems that not even Beyonce or new, lower-calorie options can convince Americans to drink more soda.
Coca-Cola Co., PepsiCo Inc. and Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc. all sold less soda in the second quarter in North America, dashing hopes for the moment that splashy new marketing and different sweetener mixes could get drinkers back.
Coca-Cola Co. said it sold 4 percent less soda in North America, while PepsiCo Inc. simply said its decline for the region was in the "mid-single digits." Dr Pepper sold 3 percent less of the fizzy drinks...

Soda prices have gone up a lot the past two years.
I now only buy when they have a great sale on what I want to drink. I am off the corn syrup sodas and if I have one, it’s made with real sugar.
Why drink soda when there’s Yuengling?
I gave up Cokes for Lent last year and never went back to drinking it or any other soda.
Sometimes I really miss a good cold coke. If I want bubbles I will drink beer but for the most part, ice tea is my drink now.
“Soda prices have gone up a lot the past two years.”
I haven’t bought a canned or bottle drink in years. I make my own and carry them with me. But, I’m incredibly cheap. (Read, the “Millionaire Next Door.”)
I drink a lot more water now, I do like a soda when I am eating though.
I drink at least 3 liters of Diet Dr. Pepper per day.
Seriously though, the first big name soda company that strikes a deal with "Soda Stream" to market their syrup will rule the soda world.
That’s great. I had contemplated doing that but I wasn’t sure that any of the cola syrups for making your own were sugar based, rather than corn-syrup based.
I drink more cold tea now also. I always have about a gallon in the fridge so that for every soda I drink about 2-3 glasses of unsweetened tea.
Don’t you all mean “pop?”
Yep, imagine a new soda steam machine that is basically a fountain drink machine at home.
Indeed, it’s the prices that have folks cutting down, nothing more. Any regular shopper who can’t see the falling value of the dollar, the sheer doubling of the cost of Pepsi and Coca-Cola products over the past two years is either demented or is spending someone else’s money.
Why would I want to drink what Beyonce drinks? It might make my ass fat, like hers... Or make me look like the Hulk.
“I had contemplated doing that but I wasnt sure that any of the cola syrups for making your own were sugar based, rather than corn-syrup based.”
I use tea or coffee. Make both to taste and serve cold. Soda is too sweet and it upsets my stomach. If you’re off it for a while and then try some, it will taste like malted battery acid. You’ll wonder why you ever drank it. Also, if you look at the sugar content, it’s a wonder we’re not all diabetic.
unsweetened? Not for me.
I like sun tea, its been a while though.
Put about 8 tea bags in one of the big glass jars and leave it out in the sun for a few hours. It’ll get dark and then you pour it over ice and sugar in a glass.
Imagine how much less they would have sold if it wasn’t for food stamps.
Coca-Cola Co., PepsiCo Inc. and Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc. will keep those campaign contributions pouring in.
And spending that food stamp money on advertising.
generic, store-brand sodas are about half the price (2 Ltr bottles) of the regular brands
I always get grief for posting this but I would serve my kids a glass of beer over a can of soda pop. I’m no health nut but soda pop is just not good to put in your body.
I’ve cut way way down. I’ll have maybe one a week if that.
The only carbonated drinks I indulge in these days are ones that are naturally carbonated
“I drink at least 3 liters of Diet Dr. Pepper per day.”
a lot of caffeine ?? !!!
I put a ton of ice in each glass I drink to dilute it. ALso take fenugreek before drinking it to deal with the sugar.
Grief for posting that? On FR?
Beer is full of B vitamins and minerals. Think of it as a health elixir. Brew your own and save on beer taxes.
You really can get used to unsweetened tea. I actually prefer it now. It just takes a little time.
When I make a pitcher of unsweetened tea, I'll throw in a bag or two of herbal tea (blueberry, lemon, etc.) along with the regular tea bags. The herbal tea gives the drink a little extra flavor.
by a little extra you mean any at all, right?
If FR had a like button, I’d click it for your comment!
You got that right. Most people I know are cutting everything they can.
Any real conservative will use ‘coke’. The rest of you Yankees can call it what you want though.
The sheeple are starting to associate soda with insulin-resistance syndrome...that Zero logo on the Pepsi products doesn’t help, either...
Seriously though, the first big name soda company that strikes a deal with “Soda Stream” to market their syrup will rule the soda world.
That's also the case for those who drink a lot of iced tea, though.
the price went up
that’s why we don’t buy so much soda anymore
I think I will.
No corn syrup at our house. Plus both major bottling companies were big supporters of the won. Between those two things we have no reason to buy any of their products.
I drink carbonated beverages, but I purchase the “store brands” unless the name brand is on sale.
Yeah, beer for kids. Cigarettes, too.
Homemade sweet tea is the sweet beverage of choice in my house this year. 14 store-brand tea bags, two cups of sugar, a lemon from the neighbor’s tree, there’s a gallon of sweet tea for about fifty cents.
Coke Zero for me.
Brand-name soda hit levels at which I simply will not pay. For example. I buy generic in bulk. I haven’t bought soda in a bottle from a gas station in years. I could afford it, but I’m simply not going to buy it, period, end of story. I have absolutely no idea how people making 30K a year could possibly afford it. So, after taxes, they have to work 1/3 to 1/2 an hour for a soda at a movie?
I also bought an adapter, online, that allows me to use refillable CO2 cans, at $3 per refill, instead of the $25+ that SodaStream charges. With that, SodaStream is a lot cheaper than the regular sodas.
I agree with you. I will absolutely not drink any diet anything or anything sweetened with HFCS, and I don’t think my kids should either. Very, very bad.
I suppose the fact that Americans DON’T HAVE THE MONEY ANYMORE to purchase these kinds of items ever dawned on the morons down at the Ass. Press. Like some schoolyard bully, their boy down at the White House has stolen everyone’s soda money.
I grab a 100oz plastic bottle of off-brand coke for $1 when I’m in the mood at the Dollar Tree. That adds up to almost 9 12oz cans fo a buck.
Wow does the Wookie know that Bouncy is contributing to Obesity with the soda she is promoting?
Anyway, due to prices going up I can’t afford sodas, I am trying to ween off of them. I do buy a case of Seltzer Water (with no Sodium) and I drop a few drops of the flavor bottles like Crystal Light and other flavors.
Now I’m trying to start drinking tea. Does anyone knows what kind of tea the Chinese Restaurants serve when you order? I love the tea and I notice no need to add sugar due to the flavor.
No cigarettes. Just nutritious beer.
Speaking of Sun-Tea, I had a 4 star french restaurant that I decided to serve Sun Tea, as a treat in the summer.. It was a major nightmare, after a month I had to develop methods to produce hundreds of gallons of the stuff, throughout the year, it was such a success..
The man that bought the place got the shock of his life when he tried to replace it, the customers complained and abandoned the restaurant in droves, not that the competition had it, because they never did.. He had to bring it back, and never missed complaining about it when we’d talk.. LOL
