Texas school district will allow teachers to carry guns

The Harrold Independent School District in Texas has passed a policy change in an effort to increase safety for its students and staff. According to a report published by Fox News on Saturday, December 15, 2012, the policy will allow teachers and other staff to carry concealed guns.

The school district, which has 110 students ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade, admitted to researching several options for better safety in the school and debated the issue for about a year before the final decision was made.

The policy was changed last October and will go into effect later this month. Teachers who wish to carry pistols will have to abide by certain safety standards which include a current Texas conceal carry license, authorization by the school district, as well as training in crisis management and hostile situations. In addition, they will be required to use ammunition that is specifically designed to reduce the risk of ricochet.

The school will not disclose how many of the 50 teachers will be carrying guns.

The only problem I see with this, and I am in favor of it, is that there are some students who believe their lot in life is to try to drive the teacher bonkers.

I knew a woman teacher about 50 years ago, who said in one rough Texas school, on her first day she introduced herself, then picked up a stick of firewood and said..”I know some of you have been rough on the last teacher. If anyone wants to try me let’s do it now!” She never had a problem with anyone in the class.

So the teacher says at the start of the first class... “unruly students get shot!”

Wow, that is just over 2 students to each teacher.

I realize there will be special programs teachers like art, music and gym, but that still seems like a lot of teachers.

But on the subject at hand

Only in Texas could something this practical and sensible happen.

(Heh heh heh)

Seriously the teacher need say nothing. Just bring some of his (or her) targets in and hang them on the front wall.

I had thought they had been doing that for years, and then I click on the article, and duh, its old info that isn’t even current. Perhaps the examiner could be more accurate in their articles.

Yeah, that might be a trifle over kill.

But that will be a rampage-free school. Count on it.

Okay, so they have been doing it for a while.

Every time one of these rampage murders happens at some other school, the composition class gives an assignment “Do you think such a rampage could occur here? Why or why not?”

on her first day she introduced herself, then picked up a stick of firewood and said..
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Like the retired Marine that had back surgery that required a lightweigh plastic upper body cast.
He showed up for school. and had a mixed crowd of older teen age boys.
He kind of shied around the class (purposely letting his guard down) and someone threw something in his direction.
He acted fidgety, stood up and his tie came out of his jacket.
He was trying to discipline the class and correct his unruly tie when he reached down, picked up a large stapler, and proceeded to staple his tie to his chest.

Nary a peep the rest of the year.

You’re right. And in the article it says “According to a report published by Fox News on Saturday, December 15, 2012”, but if you click on a link you go to an almost identical article dated August 15, 2008. Strange.

Right you are...followup story:

Harrold ISD Superintendent David Thweatt Defends Teachers Having Concealed Carry On School Campuses [AUDIO]

On the Monday edition of The Chad Hasty Show David Thweatt, superintendent of Harrold ISD, talked with Chad Hasty about teachers with concealed carry on school campuses.

In light of the horrific school shooting that took place at a Connecticut elementary school, Harrold ISD is now attracting attention for its “Guardian Plan,” that permits teachers to concealed carry on campus. Thweatt said that the district had several passive security measures in place, but after several school shooting in Pennsylvania and Virginia Tech, he enacted the plan in October of 2007.

“We implemented this plan, and as far as I’m concerned, this is something that need to happen not just in rural areas school. It needs to happen everywhere because of this awful event that took place and every educator that heard it was just so sad. And I think not just educators, anyone who though about these small children being killed brutally.

Although the plan had its opponents, Thweatt said the argument of “guns and schools don’t mix” is a very poor argument, and that more children die from accidental drowning than by guns. Thweatt also said that the safety of his students is his paramount concern, and any place that is labeled a “Gun Free Zone” is just inviting trouble because it is obvious that they are not protected.

Massachusetts is going to give this a try.

I guess they think mass shooters will shoot at the sign.
