Barack Obama is set to begin his second term, new statistics on Americas poverty rate indicate that nearly 50 million Americans, more than 16 percent of the population, are struggling to survive.
New figures released by the Census Bureau this week found a spike in poverty numbers last year, going from 49 million in 2010 to 49.7 million last year. The numbers may come as a surprise to Congress, which estimated in September that the poverty rate would drop to 46.2 million.

Post election reality check.
How is that “recovery” going?
Obama’s fault....
I wish this news had come out 10 days ago....
Women, children and minorities hardest hit........
“We’re going to blame Bush forever.” - Madeleine Albright
read: Unexpected...........
And when there are 80 to 100 million in poverty four years from now, it’ll still be... BUSH’S FAULT!
Bush, Sandy or Romney?
According to plan...
Raise taxes on “the rich”. And give away a few million mo Obamaphones. Oh, then grant amnesty to 10 million illegals.
There go those danged surprises again.
Doesn't matter that we have been seeing, with our own eyes, people we know who are out of work and struggling to find a job.
Just those danged surprises and our lying eyes at work again.
Fock'em
We didn’t hear that before the election. I wonder why.
If the communists continue as they are doing, it will be 340 million in poverty. The rest will be the government elite which as always is insulated from poverty.
They’ve got Obama. Who needs money or a job if you’ve got Obama?.
And the folks in “poverty” are receiving >$40K per year in benefits as the fedgov continues to spend $1.40 for every $1 in revenue.
The govt is like the family in 2007 riding a wave of false prosperity based on maxxed out credit cards and helocs on a house with negative equity.
But, but, but Mr President. The math does not work!
Population of USA is just under 315 million, so 315MM divided by 50MM = 6.3% not the 16 percent stated above.
No one cares, least of all those who stand to pofit the most from poverty-the Democrats.
I was in a waiting room today that had a non-network channel on...weird shows like Wendy Williams and some guy Steve Harvey’s Show. There was a commercial for SafeNet (??) cell phones...payable/qualify with Food Stamps. Not kidding.
I just had this vision of Bush in a dungeon surrounded by machines with buttons and levers and one lever says “economy” and he pulls the lever to “down” then gives an evil laugh “mwa ha ha ha ha!”
but, America Recycles Day,is more important
surprises... unexpected....
“We can’t help it!!”
Gee, you put enough burden on the horse and it stops pulling, who’d have thunk it?
You forgot to make Puerto Rico a state. That'll help, bigtime!
But they still have hope and change right?
That should feed them and keep them safe.
1 in 7 adults in Ohio has an Obamaphone.
amazing......
CBS isn't pimping this story without an agenda behind it.
I guess we'll just need some "sweeping reforms" and maybe some "expanded presidential powers".
It’s the new normal. We were recently in a rougher part of LA and all the fast food joints had big signs saying “EBT Cards Welcome”. They’re no longer food stamps, they are “Golden State Advantage” ATM cards.
They're just not doing the jobs Americans won't not do, after all!
This was in TX....eventually 1 in 7, or more, all across the country will have 0Phones...compliments of you and I.
The takers deserve what you makers have, ya know! /s
Better try that one more time...
Sorry, FRiend, you got your fraction upside down. (50,000,000/315,000,000)*100=15.87%
But only in America could you have a home, a car, cable television, internet and a smart phone and still be considered to be in poverty.
Reminds me of the joke about the guy who orders the Happy Meal, gets up the window, gets his food and starts to drive off...not before saying, "Oh, it's an 0bamaMeal...the guy behind me is paying!"
Ooooooops, out there for all to see. I got esseited, Lucy.
That’s pretty much what the poverty rate was in 1965 when “The War On Poverty” began.
Now, 15 TRILLION dollars later, virtually no change.
How dreadful and what a farce of public policy.
Right. I guess sooner or later, anyone with an income plus benefits of less then 250K a year will be in poverty according to these pimps.
I’d like to take a bunch of these “living in poverty” bunch and drop them off in rural Mexico or sub sahara Africa and show them what exactly poverty is.
“The govt is like the family in 2007 riding a wave of false prosperity based on maxxed out credit cards and helocs on a house with negative equity.”
It’s way worse than that. Aggregate debt and unfunded liabilities for federal state and local government now amount to $279 TRILLION. GDP is less than $16 T. U.S. net worth is $72 T. Imagine being a homeowner who tried to borrow an amount equal to 17 times the family’s annual income, or who tried to get a mortgage equal to nearly 4 times the market value of a house. No sane bank would make that loan.
The only way government gets away with this irresponsible behavior is because it can print money ad infinitum. It need never go broke, as it can simply inflate away its debt by paying it back in dollars worth far less than were loaned to it decades ago. But that presupposes lenders stupid enough not to quickly figure this out. When foreigners wake up and stop lending, the party will be over.
The new definition of poverty in the US now is not living as well as Donald Trump.
>> nearly 50 million Americans, more than 16 percent of the population, are struggling to survive.
I am appalled. Clearly, we must immediately tax the working people out the wazoo so the government can give all these poor people more free sh!t.

Unfounately it’s not a joke anymore ... social justice at Mickey D’s.
I bet if the Keystone XL had gone through he would be working steady. What that jerk in the WH has done to this country is criminal!
We havn’t actually hit the hard times. The last four years have been the run up to the real hard times. Wait until the US Dollar is worthless. Print all you want it won’t matter.
Then we will know hard times.
The media must be relieved. Now that their best selling product, Barry Hussien Soetoro has been elected, they can go back to reporting the actual bad news.
Correct. We've just been eating the seed corn. Soon, that will be gone and then we are in some deep sh!t.
That wouldn’t have stopped voter fraud.
Oh, that is already happening. Every auction, less and less foreign buyers show up.
Forgeign lenders are in the minority. The bulk of US debt is held by private Americans. China holds less than 8%, by comparison.
As usual, the responsible ones, the ones who save and invest, will be screwed by the rest. And it won't stop until the whole thing collapses.
