Conservative pundits turn down Newt By: Alexander Burns December 9, 2011 10:42 AM EST

The conservative opinion elite has reached a consensus on Newt Gingrich: He’s not the one they’ve been waiting for.

In the days since Gingrich leaped to the forefront of the Republican presidential race, the nation’s most prominent right-leaning commentators — many of whom have spent the last year pining for alternatives to Mitt Romney — have rendered a swift and caustic judgment on their party’s latest out-of-right-field challenger.

In columns dripping with disdain, they’ve argued that Gingrich isn’t just undesirable as an opponent for Romney — he’s probably not fit for the presidency altogether.

“He has every negative character trait that conservatives associate with ’60s excess: narcissism, self-righteousness, self-indulgence and intemperance. He just has those traits in Republican form,” New York Times columnist David Brooks wrote Friday. “It doesn’t matter if a person shares your overall philosophy. If that person doesn’t have the right temperament and character, stay away.”

Brooks, an on-and-off Barack Obama admirer and no hardcore ideologue, gave this biting assessment of Gingrich’s policy instincts: “Gingrich loves government more than I do.”

Those are themes that other columnists have developed for more than a week now, recalling Gingrich’s rocky speakership and describing him as an undisciplined, ideologically unreliable egomaniac who likely would lose the general election.

Ramesh Ponnuru, the National Review editor who recently announced his support for Romney, described the consensus on Gingrich as overwhelming.

At the beginning of November 1980, Carter was beating Reagan until he wasn't. Just saying.

“This is the main problem with Newt: Rasmussen: Obama 45%, Gingrich 40% “
The main problem with Reagan in late 1979 was this..............

Carter 47 Reagan 39”

Then came the Iranian Hostage crisis. Can you predict we get a gift like that to turn that Rasmussen poll numbers around? Of course not.

But that aside, Newt Gingrich is no Ronald Reagan.

I don’t want him. I’d happily vote for Bachmann or Santorum.

I’m not surprised at so-called conservatives on Free Republic who have trashed them.

We’ll wind up with an unelectable RINO and Obama will win a second term.

Conservatives swagger about supporting a conservative but won’t support a candidate with a proven conservative record.

We’ll either get Gingrich or Romney. Uggghhhh!

LOL are you comparing Newt with Reagan?

Newt has been a national figure for decades and everyone already has an opinion of him. He has very limited growth potential.

"Newt is not a Reagan, actually newt said it was time for sad sacks such as yourself to move beyond Reagan and compromise."

I'm the sad sack?

I'm optimistic, not resigned.

I've made things happen in my state!!

Forget about Reagan.....it's over.

You sound like so many old Democrats who were waiting for the next FDR.

You go to battle with the army you got, not with what you don't got!

I'm the sad sack?

Google my name.

I'm the one who moved beyond Reagan.

And I'm the one who will help to change Newt's perspective!!

They're wrong about pretty much everything but at least the OWS crowd has the courage of their convictions. Wish we could say the same.

That whore brooks sold out more that ten years ago, and he is as much a conservative as is paul begala or david gergen.

Just another fag boy that wants to go to the parties and his invitation is his "conservative credentials" that are always willing to dump on whatever the conservative position happens to be, and therefore can be quoted as a "differing conservative opinion".

PIMP! WHORE! C.........

“We were fooled by Tom DeLay.”

Tom Delay is the one that does not fit in with the other three.

Sadly, I think that The Donald’s hair is his own - grown from the back of his head and then swooped and swirled on his bald pate and eventually dyed orange.

As an afficionado of bad wigs and toupees, I’d like to nominate Timothy Geithner as worst wig of the week.

But seriously, if you want to hypothesize a head to head comparison of Newt and Obama, isn’t the meaningful perception the one on election day? Which comes after some sequence of debates. Who would be better at going through Obama like a white hot buzz saw in debates (of any format) than Newt? In fact that is probably the strongest argument for nominating Newt - is his ability to show a stunning, stark contrast with Obama that will transform public perception, and thus that rank order.

haha, this is hilarious. A candidate who’s not garnering support from some fellow former Congressmen, allegedly conservative pundits like Will, Brooks and Noonan, and his lesbian half-sister can’t be all bad!

The meme of the day vs. Newt seems to be ‘egomaniac.’ As if ANYONE in politics isn’t an egomaniac!
