Conservative pundits turn down Newt By: Alexander Burns December 9, 2011 10:42 AM EST
The conservative opinion elite has reached a consensus on Newt Gingrich: Hes not the one theyve been waiting for.
In the days since Gingrich leaped to the forefront of the Republican presidential race, the nations most prominent right-leaning commentators many of whom have spent the last year pining for alternatives to Mitt Romney have rendered a swift and caustic judgment on their partys latest out-of-right-field challenger.
In columns dripping with disdain, theyve argued that Gingrich isnt just undesirable as an opponent for Romney hes probably not fit for the presidency altogether.
He has every negative character trait that conservatives associate with 60s excess: narcissism, self-righteousness, self-indulgence and intemperance. He just has those traits in Republican form, New York Times columnist David Brooks wrote Friday. It doesnt matter if a person shares your overall philosophy. If that person doesnt have the right temperament and character, stay away.
Brooks, an on-and-off Barack Obama admirer and no hardcore ideologue, gave this biting assessment of Gingrichs policy instincts: Gingrich loves government more than I do.
Those are themes that other columnists have developed for more than a week now, recalling Gingrichs rocky speakership and describing him as an undisciplined, ideologically unreliable egomaniac who likely would lose the general election.
Ramesh Ponnuru, the National Review editor who recently announced his support for Romney, described the consensus on Gingrich as overwhelming.

Were so lucky to have these people to tell us what to do.Yes, now if only they possessed an alchemy that could transform a steaming pile of manure into a plausible candidate then perhaps I could support someone like Willard. So far it hasn't happened.
The article cites David Brooks, Ramesh Ponnuru, George Will, Charles Krauthammer, Michael Gerson, and Peggy Noonan.
So where are the conservatives? All I see here are RINOs (and Krauthammer’s a Democrat, isn’t he?) who are all in the tank for Romney.
A more accurate title might be “Romney groupies tun down Newt”, which is pretty much a “dog bites man” story.
Place ur bet folks......Place ur bets. Anyone really think Obama the communist can be re-elected?
My money is on Newt.....or any other reub. except Romney.
More people will sit on their rumps and not vote for newt than they did for mccain. I am really tired of this same old lessor of two evils crap, it does not turn out the base.
So the one good thing that is said about Newt, by people who were paid to watch him over the past couple decades, is that he may be successful at fooling enough gullible Republicans to vote for him in the primary.
We were fooled by Ralph Reed.
We were fooled by Tom DeLay.
We were fooled by Grover Norquist.
We were fooled by W.
We WILL be fooled again ... and we will love/hate/wallow in it when our foolishness is revealed to us!
He is not just the elite, he is a loose cannon.
BTW new poll just out this morning. The LPS poll.
Newt 99% Obama 1%. This is a scientific poll.
Luntz has a worse wig than Traficant. I can’t take my eyes off it when he’s on tv.
LOL.
But he does have a lump in his crotch from that schlong that he can't control.
Yall may wish to reconsider a stammering, 10th amendment,2nd amendment, small government conservative guy from Lil ol Texas
We don't need their kind 'round here NO MORE!
What we have is McCain 2 without the war record. Another geezer windbag to the front. No one under 50 will vote for your guy.
If you're tired of it, do something about it!
Get involved.
Why do I have to do all the work?
“So who do they think can beat The Won?”
Any of the others have growth potential.
But Newt is already well known. People either like him or they don’t.
I just don’t see the point of compromising to nominate a RINO and still lose in the general. Newt is the new McCain. He will not only lose the election but will also hand over control of the congress back to the dems.
And, the star of them all “Miss Piggy McCain”.
“His hair is perfect!”
Aaaahhh-ooooo!
Werewolves of Boston!
LOL
David Brooks would like Newt better if he creased his pants and had more effeminate traits. Other than Huntsman, what alternative to Romney would Brooks want? He may be looking for an excuse not to vote for obama again, but not really. Same goes for other so called “Republican elites.” Which alternative do they want to pull out of the magic hat?
Any conservative alternative beats Romney. Who is it going to be? People are getting disappointed from shooting star shock.
