According to the survey, which was released Monday, 28 percent of Republicans and independents who lean towards the GOP say they support Perry as their party's presidential nominee, with Romney at 21 percent. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is at ten percent, with Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, who's making his third bid for the White House, former Godfather's Pizza CEO and radio talk show host Herman Cain, and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, all at seven percent. The poll indicates that Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota is at four percent, with former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania at three percent and former Utah Gov. and ambassador to China Jon Huntsman at one percent.

wrong, because this poll asked “adult americans” who they’d vote for...not many likely voters. It is bunk.

The best thing Perry has going for him is Romney as the alternative.
Romney is a guaranteed re-election of Obama because the base will not be enthused at best and a big chunk (depsite what our RINO masters tell us to do) will stay home.

So this poll is correct? But the straw poll.... no no no, that’s way off. We need to disregard that.
/sarcasm
And same goes for vice versa. Let this play out. Cain has looked like the stronger candidate as of late. Whether Perry makes a comeback is up to him. He hasn’t impressed me. But who knows. Still a bit to go yet.

No need to disregard straw poll. It just means Perry needs to brush up and get on top of his game. Cain won the Florida straw poll fair and square - based on the merits - not on tearing down Perry.
To: TexasFreeper2009
Actually, his numbers have gone up. But any poll that asks “adult Americans” their preference is a bad poll. You know it.

I think he is probably working on an excuse to skip the next debate right about now.

A poll based on 447 GOP or GOP-leaning voters, but they don’t release the questions, question order, internals, full results, etc.?
That’s beyond useless.
To: ilovesarah2012
I was definitely joking on that point. That seems to be the one “certainty” here. Huntsman is a joke candidate.
To: Blackandproud
it appears that Newt is breaking out of the pack. That's because Newt and Cain are both class acts and were able to rise above viciously attacking their fellow republican candidates and still get their message across.
To: jersey117
Agreed. If he does and heeds the “wake up” call, then that’s fine. If Cain stays strong and get’s stronger, than that is fine as well. If not, then someone will replace him. So far, Cain has impressed me and has impressed the immediate people that I have talked to.

The figures for GOP choice are based on responses from those adults who identified themselves as Republicans or Republican-leaning independents. True this is not the same as likely GOP voters but I doubt it is completely off. Let’s see what Ras comes up with this week.

I agree. This has been a surprise story so far, hasn’t it?
I guess it shows that sheer intellectual doggedness counts for something in the GOP primary.
I would NOT have predicted a Newt surge a month ago. Maybe 10’ish is not a surge, but you are right, as compared to where he was when he took his Greek cruise, this is very surprising.
I think it also shows that GOP voters really care about substance. And that is a good thing.

Sorry, about that...I was totally joking. I do not seriously think much about Huntsman. He is a clown and he has no chance, at all.
To: chilepup
Perry's poll numbers have hoovered around 29% + or - 2 points or so for a solid month in every poll taken of the race.
Romney's poll numbers have hoovered around 22% + or - 2 points or so over the last month.
You can ignore one poll as a possible outlier, but when every single poll for a solid month from different pollsters using different methods shows the race at a particular point... you can be pretty darn sure that's where the race is at.
To: no dems
The GOP nominee MUST (and I believe will...) defeat obama.

I wouldn’t cross the street to piss on Romney if he was on fire, let alone vote for him.
I’d vote down-ticket and just leave that blank, or do a write in.
My vote matters in NM, too. We have a paltry 4 electors or something, but we swing on a couple hundred votes each election.

So this poll is correct? But the straw poll.... no no no, thats way off. We need to disregard that. Who said that??? Both polls are valid for what they are. Cain had a great showing at the debate and was rewarded for it in the Straw Poll. I'm happy for him...I love the guy. But Rick Perry is still the strongest candidate we have...as this poll indicates. I think Cain's straw pooll number will give him more visability and boost him from 3rd tier and easily ignored to 2nd tier, hard to ignore. It's still early and a lot can happen. As my tag line indicates I think Perry and Cain would make an excellent ticket.

My guess is that Perry's statisticians know how powerful is the national impact of Texas’ huge population plus the impact of millions of Hispanic respondents. And that's the great danger of going overboard on attacking Perry. The Hispanic vote is huge, and they do seem to have solidarity with their undocumented brethren.
We might not like that, but if it's fact, then we have to deal with it.

Nobody thinks the FL straw poll was a fluke. It wasn't a fluke, but it doesn't mean Herman Cain as the ghost of a chance to win the nomination.
It means activists aren't happy with Perry. But, as this poll indicates, that really hasn't hurt Perry with the broader electorate, which is what anyone with any political sophistication would have predicted. The debates, as usual, have been much ado about nothing. We are right where we have been since Perry got in the race. He's the prohibitive favorite. Mitt is the also ran with no support outside the Republican Party's vestigial left wing. Everyone else is a no-hoper.
The dissatisfaction that drove Cain's straw poll win means that there is an opportunity for another conservative candidate. But it is far from clear that there is any candidate ready, willing and able to exploit that opportunity.
The “Perry is Toast” chorus is going to be disappointed. The “heartless” squall, like the gardasil squall will blow over leaving the race exactly as it always was. Perry remains the closest thing we have to a serious conservative candidate. Romney remains a proud progressive statist. Barring a new entry Perry wins, easily.

Perry has it all wrong on tuition for illegal children.
The American people are just as innocent as the illegal children. Further, the children are Mexican or whatever citizens and can apply for scholarships in their own country to go to school in the United States.
What are they going to say when they graduate? “I want to thank Mom and Dad for being dishonest and sneaky and bringing me here for a discounted education on your dime”
