President Obama enjoys a 49-43 percent lead over Republican nominee-in-waiting Mitt Romney, according to an NBC News/Wall Street Journal national poll released on Thursday evening. The 44th president has a 49-46 percent approval rating, but his numbers on managing the economy — 45-52 percent disapproval — indicate Obama’s central vulnerability.

Even though Santorum is out of the race for the White House and Romney is the all but certain nominee, the battle for the GOP nomination technically continues. According to the survey, 57% of Republicans say that Romney is their choice for the GOP nominee, with 19% backing Gingrich and 18% supporting Paul.

One chunk of the Republican electorate has proved an incredibly fickle voting bloc, denying party unity while the nominating process dragged on.
