Doomsday campers travel the country preaching the Apocalypse...on May 21
mail online ^

Most people like to push thoughts about the end of the world to the back of their minds, hoping that the apocalypse, if it ever comes, will be a long way off.

But for one group of not-so happy campers, doomsday is a lot sooner...May 21 to be precise.

According to the predictions of the Family Radio ministry, on that date a massive earthquake will shake the world apart, littering the ground with 'many dead bodies'.

I think this is Harold Camping's group again ...

It'll probably be around March 19 with that extreme super moon, the closest perigee in 18 years.

And yet, the earth wasn't destroyed 18 years ago. Amazing. ;-)

Just pointing out something that at least has a foundation in reality, as slight as it is.

Yes, I know. I was just tying in the doom predictors to what you said.   :-)

BTW, the Northridge Earthquake in California, in which I was an unwilling participant by virtue of being two miles from the epicenter, was two years late for the super moon of 1992.

Maybe we could get a killer deal on those nice motor homes on the evening of the 20th?

That’s the guy. He seems to be a little better than random. I’m waiting to see if something happens. sd

Good idea. We should also ask if they’re holding any long-term munis.

Changes in the magnetic field are just a small side effect.

Not small. I can't find them now but I've seen graphs taken from space of the earth's magnetic field before or during some earthquakes and the whole field is distorted.

Bottom line, there isn’t going to be any May 21st cataclysm. Massive geological forces, when they do happen, usually build up for a very long time, and give all sorts of indications.

I don't know anything about May 21, your post just caught my eye of being way too simplistic.

“The strength of the field at the Earth’s surface ranges from less than 30 microteslas (0.3 gauss) to over 60 microteslas (0.6 gauss). The average magnetic field strength in the Earth’s outer and inner core was measured to be 25 Gauss, 50x stronger than the magnetic field at the surface.”

By comparison:

50 gauss: a typical refrigerator magnet
100 gauss: a small iron magnet
15,000-30,000 gauss: a medical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) electromagnet.

If this is the closest in 18 years, why didn’t the End come then?

But a refrigerator magnet can't flux hundreds of thousands of miles into space. And if a magnetic field so huge distorts so much before and during an earthquake, then there is more to an earthquake than just two rocks rubbing together.

It is exactly two rocks rubbing together, releasing an enormous amount of piezoelectric energy, on top of a huge amount of mechanical energy. The great Alaska earthquake of 1964 was estimated to have been equivalent to 242 megatons of TNT.

10 minutes before the 2008 Sichuan earthquake in China, there were pictures of clouds in the area that abruptly took on rainbow hues from the piezoelectric energy being released prior to the release of most of the mechanical energy.

This amount of electricity would strongly distort magnetic fields over a large area.

piezoelectric - Show off! Did you have to use a word that would send me to a dictionary? Seriously, is that like extreme static electricity?

I was being sarcastic and pointing out something that at least has a foundation in fact for maybe causing some trouble.

When some crystals fracture or are distorted one way or another, it can release an amount of energy. If you put a wintergreen Lifesaver between your teeth in the dark and crunch down on it with your mouth open, it creates enough energy to cause visible light, which is called “sparking”, and has sold a lot of candy over the years.

Conversely, with some crystals, like quartz, when they have a current applied to them, they change shape, in a very regular manner, which is how we get quartz watches, that are a factor more accurate than mechanical watches.

May 21, 2011. Be there. It'll be cool.

The JWs also changed the date, predicting the end in 1975.

As someone pointed out up there, Saturday, the 21st of May is Armed Forces Day.

Smells a lot like Westboro Baptist.
