Mostly sales taxes actually. I think the property tax issue is overblown here. There are a few areas that are highly vocal about property tax (Harris Cty for example) but most of the State seems to be in line. I’ve seen some comparisons and our State average is about the same as most of the country. We also don’t have a ‘personal property’ tax like a lot of States. This tax assesses not only your physical property value, but also the value of all the items you own (TVs, Cars, etc) and taxes you on those each year.

I'll look again, but I recall that Texas had the second or third lowest overall tax burden in the country (including property) yet we had the fourth highest per-capita revenue rates.

I talked to some friends who say they pay 4800 dollars a year property taxes on their modest home. I was shocked by that amount. I have nothing at all against Texas and actually would not mind moving to San Antonio when my wife and I retire someday.

You would think they would have learned from history.

What you have to understand is that thinking is a taxable activity here in Michigan, so many mitten residents gave it up long ago. They let their union bosses and welfare caseworkers do all the thinking for them.

Rather funny to see what they are busily doing to their working citizens, don’t think I’d move my business there.

I would love it if you would make this assertion to any one of our 148 overpaid senators/representatives. Seriously.

Not true in all cases. TN has no State tax and low property taxes. With the state living off of sales tax, Tourism is a big helper.

I’m not blown away, yet, but I am losing my grip. I’m not sure where I’ll land but I am checking out a couple of prospects. I’ll miss the green and the woods and streams.

2007 House Bill 5194 (Increase income tax from 3.9 percent to 4.35 percent) (House Roll Call 441)

Passed in the House (57 to 52) on September 30, 2007, to increase the state income tax from 3.9 percent to 4.35 percent, effective Oct. 1, 2007. The bill will take an additional $765 million, and is part of a deal to avoid state spending cuts that includes a $750 million tax on on many services

Damn liberals.

In my city of Westland pop. ~85,000 there are over 1,000 vacant foreclosed houses. That figure does not include houses that are for sale by a real estate. Add that to the abandonded businesses thruout the city. The theory of getting more (in taxes) from less residents to ‘balance’ the state budget is bizarre at best. Plan on taking a 30-50% hit on your home if you decide to move. Meanwhile your SEV never goes down.

Replace Washington to Government Masters in the quote below.

***

...in the lexicon of the political class, the word “sacrifice” means that the citizens are supposed to mail even more of their income to Washington so that the political class will not have to sacrifice the pleasure of spending it.

I hope there’s a big sale on refrigerators, because lots of people will be needing the boxes they come in. But hey, at least the welfare office will be open.

We've dropped our price as much as we're going to, from $110,900 down to $99,900. We still have some room to negotiate, but that's all we're going to do. I'm not going to lose any more equity just to get the heck out of Ingham County.

I'm going to be looking out for the usual taxable assessment increase on my winter prop tax bill, and I'm going to fight it if it increases. I now have actual evidence regarding how devalued my property is. All of the neighbors I've talked to are planning on doing the same.

Last I heard, Lansing had over 4,000 foreclosures. Everything from dungheaps to McMansions.
