Mostly sales taxes actually. I think the property tax issue is overblown here. There are a few areas that are highly vocal about property tax (Harris Cty for example) but most of the State seems to be in line. I’ve seen some comparisons and our State average is about the same as most of the country. We also don’t have a ‘personal property’ tax like a lot of States. This tax assesses not only your physical property value, but also the value of all the items you own (TVs, Cars, etc) and taxes you on those each year.

I'll look again, but I recall that Texas had the second or third lowest overall tax burden in the country (including property) yet we had the fourth highest per-capita revenue rates.

I talked to some friends who say they pay 4800 dollars a year property taxes on their modest home. I was shocked by that amount. I have nothing at all against Texas and actually would not mind moving to San Antonio when my wife and I retire someday.
