Residents are howling at the sight of coyotes (LA)
LA Times ^ | 1/23/07 | Bob Pool, Times Staff Writer

One homeowner thought two wolves were slinking with their tails between their legs across his frontyard in the darkness. Another thought someone's unleashed pet collies were trotting briskly down her street's sidewalk in broad daylight.

Residents of a neighborhood between Hancock Park and the Fairfax district had never seen coyotes before.

They've seen them now — and an invasion of the wily predators has set the residential area in the middle of one of the busiest parts of Los Angeles on edge.

More than 30 coyote sightings have been made in recent weeks in the flatlands bordered by Gardner Street, La Brea Avenue, 3rd Street and Melrose Avenue. Children and pets are being kept indoors. Adults have taken to carefully looking before stepping out of their homes.

Authorities offer assurances that attacks on humans are rare. Still, the coyotes have caused concern in the neighborhood.

"We see them on street corners and in our driveways," said resident Jeanne Litvin. "On Friday, a man at Alta Vista [Boulevard] and 1st Street had to sit in his car and wait for them to leave before he could get out."

I think these whiners need to move back to the East Coast or wherever the hell they lost their balls.

Maybe they want to reconsider giving all that money to wacko "Animal rights" or "Environmental" groups like PETA and the Sierra Club now.

Coyotes? You mean the type that drive vans full of illegals?? Oh, you mean the four-legged kind...aha!!

Easy to get confused in that area when it relates especially to Los Angeles...

Get some traps and bait them with roadrunners and you'll catch them all.

This is nothing new. I lived in the hills thereabouts for a long time and heard/saw plenty of coyotes. Outside cats and small dogs occasionally became coyote food, but it goes with the territory.

Get them on the Acme mailing list. That should take them out in no time.

Believe it or not, we have lots of them here in central Indiana.

I hear them often on cold clear nights, and my Siberian husky seems to regard them as kinfolks. She howls right along with them when they get going.

The above coyote is a healthy looking one...the one's in Los Angeles are pretty mangy looking, since they are always getting hit by cars, getting hung up in fencing, and not eating much other than cats and small dogs. Nearly every one I have seen has a messed up tail.

If it's any consolation, the coyotes keep the rat population down.

Yep. Heck, we knew several by sight last place I lived in SoCal. Leader of the group was easy to spot: had no tail. Outdoor cats and rat dogs are a big draw to hungry coyotes.

We now have them in all 100 counties of North Carolina.

I still remember the first time I heard them howling at night, back on my family farm... maybe 7 years ago.
The sound is unmistakable!

In my old neighborhood in Orange County, it was not unusual to see coyotes going down the street in the early morning. It was also not unusual for them to attack small dogs and cats!

Watching a Road runner cartoon with my son once when he was maybe 5 or 6. The Coyote is opening up a package from ACME and my son observed:

Why does the Coyote always buy his stuff from those guys? There stuff never works.

Out of the mouths of children.

Hey, we have Coyotes here on the East Coast as well...these whiners must have all just lived sheltered lives.
