Florida Group Proposes Confederate Flag License Plate
wftv ^ | August 18, 2006

Posted on 08/18/2006 9:48:38 AM PDT by stainlessbanner

The group Sons of Confederate Veterans met at Orlando's Lake Eola Park to show off their proposed personalized tag late Friday morning. They said it's simply a matter of time before the plate becomes one of the many you can purchase as a specialty license plate.

The group said the plate honors Florida's heritage by showing all five flags of the confederate army, including their battle flag. But it's a heritage some say simply represents hate.

Standing below the memorial for confederate soldiers, a small but vocal group made their point Friday. They want Floridians to learn that the Civil War wasn't only about slavery and they want a way to honor those who gave their lives in service of the confederacy 140 years after the war ended. They admit the proposed vanity plate could bring up some bad memories, but that's part of the process.

"The plate was designed as a history lesson. We teach history and there will be no more misuse of this flag for hate. We don't use it for hate," said John Walker Adams, Sons of Confederate Veterans.

The plate is still in the planning stages. But, the group said, their required survey showing that 30,000 possible people would use the plate was going well. Next comes a trip to Tallahassee, where the battle flag would get its final approval, one that local resident Sue Lang said just isn't needed.

"I think it is stirring up the pot. We have come so far with woman's rights and civil rights, it's taking a big step back," Lang said.

There is another element to the proposal. Not only does the group say they want to get people talking about Confederate heritage, but also get the money from the specialty plate fees and use that for education about their heritage.

But then if it was all about slavery, then why did the North invade the South when the Southern States invoked their 9th and 10th Amendment rights?

They invaded the south when the south opened fire on Ft. Sumter.

Wonder when the pro-america anti-dixie folks who post here are going to realize where the phrase "band of brothers" comes from.

Shakespeare's Henry V "We few, we happy few, we band of brothers..." Or do you have some equally revisionist origin for it?

"It was about unilateral secession and an attack on US troops at Ft. Sumter."

And just what were those federal troops at Ft. Sumter doing? (Hint: it didn't have anything to do with slavery, but it did have a lot to do with what motivated many southerners to support withdrawal from a union that was increasingly in the thrall of northern mercantilist interests.)

Occupying a fort that had been built with federal money, on land deeded to the federal government by the state of South Carolina.

but it did have a lot to do with what motivated many southerners to support withdrawal from a union that was increasingly in the thrall of northern mercantilist interests

Funny, there's no mention of northern mercantalist interests in the Declaration of Causes that South Carolina's Secession Convention issued, but lots of talk about slavery.

You seem like a knowledgeable poster, so I will just assume that you know the answer but don't want to admit it.

I gave my answer. If you're going to play the tariff card, lay it on the table and we'll play out the hand.

Georgia's got 'em. I've had mine since 2000. It's an SCV tag, but not required to be an active member! I consider it an honor to my gr-gr-grandfather Greenberry King private in the Ga 56th Infantry Co. G. Army of the Tennesse

The North gave up to the South over a dozen of installations except for Ft. Pickens and Ft. Sumter. Why? Why did North Carolina and Tennessee secede and when? What did Lincoln promise the South about Ft. Sumter? How many Yankees were killed at Sumter and how? Did the firing upon Ft. Sumter really deserve a response to invade the entire South and begin a War that was responsible for the deaths of over a half million Americans? Why did Lincoln fire David Hunter and John C. Fremont early in the war? There are too many inconsistencies in history for one to lay the blame for the war and secession on the alter of slavery.

Let me begin by saying I don't give a damnn what the people of Florida choose to put on their license plates. I don't live there, I've never lived there, and I never plan on living there. Rebel flags, space shuttles, naked manatees, whatever. Makes absolutely no difference to me. However, I couldn't let your post go by unchallenged.

The North gave up to the South over a dozen of installations except for Ft. Pickens and Ft. Sumter. Why?

Most of what the south seized were unmanned. The exception was Texas, where the commanding general there ordered the troops to turn over facilities without approval of Washington. General Twiggs later became a confederate general, surprise, surprise. Sumter and Pickens had commanders who did their duty.

What did Lincoln promise the South about Ft. Sumter?

I give up. What did Lincoln promise the South about Fort Sumter?

How many Yankees were killed at Sumter and how? Did the firing upon Ft. Sumter really deserve a response to invade the entire South and begin a War that was responsible for the deaths of over a half million Americans?

Had the Japanese managed to bomb Pearl Harbor and sink all those ships yet not kill anyone would it have been any less a declaration of hostilities? The South bombarded Sumter for more than 24 hours, and had they killed every man in the process their actions would have been no more hostile than not killing anyone. The fact that nobody died is more a tribute to the fort and the poor marksmanship of the rebel artillery than any sense of altruism on the part of the Davis regime.

Why did Lincoln fire David Hunter and John C. Fremont early in the war?

It boiled down to refusal to obey the existing civil laws.

Manning their assigned post and waiting to see what came next I imagine.

Y'all trot out the Dec. of Causes on every thread.

And you trot out nothing to contradict them but your say-so. Y'all keep insisting that it wasn't about slavery, but the actual secession conventions issued the declarations and said that it WAS, in fact, all about slavery, with maybe a token nod toward navigation acts (Georgia) or Indians (Texas). If you've got some contemporaneous documents, some speeches by southern leaders, some newspaper editorials that say what's leading the southern states to secede, and it isn't overwhelmingly about slavery and the threat to slave property rights that the Republican electoral victory supposedly posed, I'd love to see it.
