Florida Group Proposes Confederate Flag License Plate

The group Sons of Confederate Veterans met at Orlando's Lake Eola Park to show off their proposed personalized tag late Friday morning. They said it's simply a matter of time before the plate becomes one of the many you can purchase as a specialty license plate.

The group said the plate honors Florida's heritage by showing all five flags of the confederate army, including their battle flag. But it's a heritage some say simply represents hate.

Standing below the memorial for confederate soldiers, a small but vocal group made their point Friday. They want Floridians to learn that the Civil War wasn't only about slavery and they want a way to honor those who gave their lives in service of the confederacy 140 years after the war ended. They admit the proposed vanity plate could bring up some bad memories, but that's part of the process.

"The plate was designed as a history lesson. We teach history and there will be no more misuse of this flag for hate. We don't use it for hate," said John Walker Adams, Sons of Confederate Veterans.

The plate is still in the planning stages. But, the group said, their required survey showing that 30,000 possible people would use the plate was going well. Next comes a trip to Tallahassee, where the battle flag would get its final approval, one that local resident Sue Lang said just isn't needed.

"I think it is stirring up the pot. We have come so far with woman's rights and civil rights, it's taking a big step back," Lang said.

There is another element to the proposal. Not only does the group say they want to get people talking about Confederate heritage, but also get the money from the specialty plate fees and use that for education about their heritage.

Good! I'm sick and tired of the socialist PC crowd rewriting history and lying to our children.

There is a Confederate Memorial at Eola Park. I've always wondered how long it would be before someone demands that it be torn down.

The confederate flag has been misused by people on both sides. Unfortunately it has become to represent hate because of their lies. But also because certain groups that are hateful use it.

To me its no more racist than the green flag certain other groups use.

Nice looking license plate. Now let's see how long it takes for an intruder to show up and start spewing their nonsense...

For Reference....FLA offers over 104 specialty plates including schools, environmental causes, civil rights, education, etc. You can see them all here: http://www3.hsmv.state.fl.us/Intranet/dmv/specialtytags/specialindex.cfm

The SCV tag would be a good addition - other states already have SCV tags available.

I am sure the NBA and MLB will love to play their All-Star Games in Florida.

And of course the NFL will love to have the Super Bowl in Florida.

Those that oppose the license plate claim all they see is hate. Well, when I see something named after MLK all I see is honoring a known womanizer that was so unfaithful to his wife that he was asked to leave the church where he was pastor, the same man who was unfaithful to his wife the morning he was killed, a man whose entourage didn't pay hotel bills when they went to a city to demonstrate and shook the owners down if they protested, a man that chose to encourage the growth a communist school in Tennessee that preached the overthrow the US government, a man that plagiarized his doctoral thesis and was never questioned about his facts and sources, and a man that didn't give credit to any of the speeches he plagiarized openly. Had he not been assassinated, he would have become the same pathetic leader that Jesse Jackson has become when his MO and true colors were exposed. I am offended each time I see the street signs named after this man of little ethics and moral turpitude and am offended when I have to honor a holiday named after such a man when more substantial American heroes are slighted (Washington and Lincoln) to accommodate this man for political correctness.

Yep, Virginia and South Carolina both have SCV plates. Both had the usual expected controversy about it but the SCV prevailed in the end.

This plate is a little different, though. The SC, NC, and VA plates aren't "Confederate Heritage" plates, but are specifically for members of the SCV (I think you have to show membership in order to get them, much the same way I'd have to show my ham radio license to get an amateur radio tag). They have the SCV seal on them and "Sons of Confederate Veterans" text on the plates. This looks like a generic plate that you wouldn't have to be a member of the SCV to purchase, and as such, may be more vulnerable to the SPLC or some other anti-Southern organization finding a judge to throw it out. The SCV plates tend to make it through because it's not legal to deny one organization a plate while letting others have theirs.
