What does "Ping" mean?

I see so many people asking to be put on the 'ping list', what does that mean?
I also see that you can be 'pinged' if something you are interested in is posted. Are you notified someway?

I believe the term does originate with submarine pings, but its common internet use predates Hunt for Red October (1990) and is a unix command. If you have Mac OS, Linux, or any flavor of unix, issue a command line; ping www.freerepublic.com and you will get a report on network connectivity between your node and that of freerepublic. The usage as a computer term supposedly dates from 1983
The "ping" command prompt also works in DOS and all flavors of Windows.

I wondered about this ping-thing for about six months. At first I thought it was a Hunt For Red October joke. Then I found threads mailed to me when I accidentally wrote ping to the author. Good times.
Ping is the person you are sending your post to. Their response is called a pong. There are formal ping lists (predetemined names that would share similar interests) and there are informal ping lists of people you know have ping lists, share similar interests, and/or general chat.
Honestly, the response you received on this thread is tame humor. Most are sillier--problee cuz they finished having deep discussions on illegal immigrant alien Bushbots from Dubai that came to save Terri Shiavo from cheese and moose. 8)
