When I try to search an artice by title that I posted previously to see how many views it got, I don't get a find. And just now I tested to search an article recently posted titled: Pennsylvania, Michigan crucial to fall election ... I did not get a find and when I use "match any word" in the title, articles are listed but not the one I searched.

what is the deal with all the duplicate threads lately? it seems like there are several of the same threads posted over and over sometimes there are threads that were posted from the day or days before often there are muliptle threads of the same topic on the first page. I have been guilty of this as well even though I have searched for the keyword

A quick and dirty search of any and all of FreeRepublic thanks to Google 'site:' function. No more excuses... Google results for site:freerepublic.com.

Several newspapers and The Associated Press have settled a copyright infringement lawsuit against the operator of a collection of Web sites, the news organizations announced Friday. The Police News Publishing Co., Breck Porter and six affiliated Web sites had been accused of accessing the news content of the organizations without their authorization and posting it on the Web sites, where advertising appears. The content was then archived; the archiving, publication, distribution and display of the content all violated the news organizations' copyright, according to the suit. Porter, of Galveston, was the editor of the various Web sites. In addition to...

How do you add photos to the postings? Anyone, please? I can do the text but not photos.

I cannot find the state-specific message boards since coming back from vacation on Sunday. Can anyone help me find them? Cheers!

It appears that I post something --I make sure to INCLUDE its source...it is NOT offensive or obscene--and you immediately remove iit....( in this case a portion of a thread i found illuminating from Hillaryclintonforum.net) this happens constantly....and is very frustrating....the "free" in free republic does not appear to hold---perhaps a clarification of your increasingly rigid rules would help? The parameters are so narrow some good content is being unilaterally struck....PLEASE EXPLAIN so that i can contribute in a way that allows my points to be seen. Thank you.

In the 'pings' set in some comments, besides the expected member names, I have seen the word 'All'. Does that 'ping' the message to everyone who already left a comment on that thread? How about those who comment after? And are there other 'special' words, besides 'All'? Thanks.

Bloggers, like me, are voicing their views and commentary on the news (and falsehoods, etc) of the day as is our right under the constitution. When a corporation tries to tell me I cannot comment, criticize (and more often correct) their lousy product I lose all interest in being reasonable. There are lines you do not cross because they cannot be uncrossed. The-news-source-that-shall-not-be-named, which went after bloggers for excerpting and linking their biased and error prone ‘news’ articles, crossed that line - in full hypocrisy it seems: 1. The AP is essentially arguing that anyone who excerpts 33 to 79...

This is our Boston tea Party. The Associated Press wants to levy a $12.50 and up license fee (aka extortion fee) on any blogger who quotes more than 4 words from one of their propaganda pieces. This is an outrageous attempt to control the blogosphere and free speech itself. To hell with their license fee and to hell with the AP. Any AP article that gets posted to FR will be jettisoned into the harbor posthaste. Please do not post any AP material to FR excerpted or not.

Below is the latest revision of my profile page which lays out the guidelines for the Religion Forum. Based on a fruitful discussion this morning with another moderator, it has been revised again to simplify and clarify what we are after with the new thread tag “ecumenic.” Please review it and let me know if anything is unclear. Also, if you have complaints about me, air them on this thread. RELIGION MODERATOR’S PROFILE PAGE I am the current Religion Moderator and have general responsibility for this Religion Forum on Free Republic. However, all moderators have authority on the RF as...

It looks like someone has altered the Free Republic backend code so that if you try to post a quotation with the standard double quote mark surrounding it [ASCII 34]: "blah blah blah" then there is a new filter in place which automatically changes that to Microsoft-Word-styled left quote and right quote [ASCII 147 and ASCII 148]: “blah blah blah” In other words, "" -vs- “”

It seems there are more and more religious posts every day on Free Republic. Posts bashing this belief or that one...posts on Mormons, on Catholics, who's going to Heaven...who's going to Hell...theology, etc. Has the site turned into "Free Religion?" There are hardly any conservative topics in News anyore. It's degenrated into a bunch of religious people trying to convince others whose beliefs are best. Why is that?

Looking at the "Updated FR Excerpt and Link Only" thread, I see that Gannett Papers are on the "link only" list: "Received another letter from Gannett Publications, publisher of USAToday, and several other newspapers. Due to contractual arrangements they have with third-party content providers, they have denied our request to allow posting of excerpts. They will only allow the posting of titles and links. Please do not post full text or even excerpts from the following Gannett Web sites: " I understand why, with the costs of legal time and the likelihood that the MSM/DemocRAT party would want to shut...

This thread is for the purpose of discussion regarding fundraising efforts. Free Republic is sustained by voluntary contributions. There is no paid advertising and, hence, no pop up or banner ads. We all know, and hopefully, appreciate this. We all also know of the quarterly fund raising campaign, a.k.a. the Freepathon. Love ‘em or hate ‘em - this is how a great deal of the money is obtained to pay expenses. Some of us know of the monthly donor option. We can elect to have an automatic deduction made from a credit card account. There have been some private discussions...

Threads on Freerepublic prior to 9/11 have a different format. I have tried to search for some of these older articles. Maybe they are no longer available. For example: Catholic ProLifers under attack by McCain From a historical perspective, it is an interesting article. One problem I am finding is that vanity articles may not be accessable... When I try to access such an article, it comes up with: No such file (give_legacy_article) Just curious if there is a way for ol' timers to access the archives? There are much more important things to be done at Free Republic.

Am I the only one who can't see new posts?

In late April, markomalley and gamecock made a trial run at a “respectful dialog” category for threads on the Religion Forum. The trial failed due to the inability of the posters to agree on what is or is not “respectful.” Then in early May, several other posters appealed for the elimination of posts which seek to tear down other poster’s beliefs (iconoclasm.) Meanwhile, the situation on the Religion Forum has been exacerbated by posters on the News/Activism forum inadvertently being exposed to religious debate as a result of choosing the “everything” option on browse instead of the “News/Activism” option. If...

I generally use the convenient setting on my account, which keeps me logged in until I log out. Lately, though, everytime I close my browser I have to log in again. Is this a function of the new FR? Or have my kids messed with something on my computer (likely). Thanks for any help!

I know how to browse all the forums at once except the religion forum ? Ie suppress that forum and let the others through. The equivalent of clicking "Latest Articles" or "All of the Above" from the home page and just excluding the religion forum ? I've enjoyed the free republic for a long time but lately the signal to noise ratio coming from the religion forum is getting to me. Specifically the whole frip frap on LDS pro and con. Its a great thing to discuss its just not why I'm a freeper. Or do I have to either...

One of the database servers suffered a minor malfunction and fell behind. It's catching up now, and will be current within the next few minutes (5 or 10 minutes at latest.)

Today FR mysteriously disappeared from the internet. When it came back numerous posts were missing. In other words, it experienced "missing time", a classic symptom of Alien Abduction.

It'd be nice to talk to and listen to discussion by other freepers any time of day.... I know there _used_ to be an IRC server (sorta), but is there something in place now? Or does anyone know of any right-leaning political-centric IRC channels out there on any of the big networks? If there's a void, perhaps I'll whip something up and we can start pushing its use here.

Just received a notice from NewsMax.com. They want us to post brief excerpts and links only from their site from now on. Thanks Jim

Jim Robinson has created and maintains a huge treasure trove of news and information here at FreeRepublic.com. He gladly shares it with us Freepers and the rest of the world (a.k.a. - lurkers). And thanks to Jim and staff, FreeRepublic has a fantastic search engine (far surpassing Google), IMHO, due to the plethora of relevant news and information from around the world posted by us Freepers. For lack of a better description, I would classify FreeRepublic as a huge historical news and information database thanks to all of the postings and comments of Freepers (and a few disrupters - ZOT!!)....

<p>I fixed the page-too-wide/horizontal-scrollbar problem many were experiencing. This typically happened when either a long URL or string of characters found its way into the article summary, or when somebody posted a very wide image and you're viewing pings or comments using the brevity setting of "Text" (so that you see the comment text.) I'm embarrassed to admit the fix was a lot simpler than I expected, just a few lines crucial CSS statements seem to have corrected the issue.</p>

I would like to advance an idea to see if there would be any support for it. Right now, on the religion forum, there are two types of threads: open threads and caucus/devotional threads. On an "open" thread, pretty much anything goes, with the exception of personal attacks against other posters on that thread. In caucus threads, any type of questioning or criticism, even if politely phrased, can be quashed by any member of that caucus. There isn't any middle ground out there. I don't think that is constructive. I don't think that helps me understand non-Catholic religions. I don't...

When I came on FR this morning my configuration had changed. In order to see my sidebar I have to use the bottom scroll arrow to see it. I went to 'configure sidebar' but to no avail. I also went to my account to tinker with 'my preferences'. There are only three options on it now. (1) Thread Pagination (2) Browsing (3)WindowsNone of these are any help in getting back by previous layout. Any help sure would be appreciated.

The new format for browsing comments includes the entire reply, as opposed to the old format, which had only the titles of the comments. The new way presents several problems: First, because of images, it takes longer to load. Secondly, because of long URLs posted in these replies, all text scrolls off the edge of the screen, making it very difficult to read. Third, it's harder to get a sense of what the hot threads are, because there are fewer per page. Fourth, if someone hasn't read the article, the reply makes no sense, so there's no good reason to...

This morning I logged in to find 118 emails in my inbox. They were "returned mail for error" and each was a porno spam sent by someone using my FR email address. I have no idea how many were sent that reached someone succesfully. Is there someway to prevent/stop this? Thanks.

Updated the beta site today. I've added the following new features to the mail system: Favorites folder-- you can mark messages as favorites. Favorites are saved into a folder that can be accessed through the "Favorites" tab on the mail interface.Search! You can search for messages from people, and you can search for text within messages sent to you.and a few miscellaneous changes. I'm also experimenting with format changes on the index pages.

Ladies and gents, I have a problem. I've posted here for years, and I've let it slide until now. I should have asked these questions before, but I was too lazy/indifferent to bother. Anyway, it's gotten to the point where I can't take it anymore. I can't post pictures. I can't italicize the text that I want to respond to. I can't post links. I can't post text in different colors or fonts. I've tried tinkering with the settings on Free Republic. I've tried tinkering with my web browser. Can someone out there give me an idiot-proof explaination of what...

<p>Will be installing an update tonight that fixes a number of issues. The version that will be installed is currently available on the beta site.</p>
<p>Fixed time zone issues, using JavaScript to ask your browser to format the time stamp. If you don't have JavaScript enabled, you'll see the default Pacific time.</p>

vanity-My New posts to you notice doesn't go away after I click on it and visit my pings

<p>Just installed a quick change to the pings page. It brings it more in line with what it is expected to look like. One particular change is the "greening" of comments from you, to more easily differentiate something you've posted vs. something posted to you. Not so sure about the way that looks, so please give me feedback.</p>

Is anyone else's "New posts to you" stuck on?

<p>Next up on the menu: I've been upgrading the system software on all our servers. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way the spell checker broke and the new version of that software depends on software that I haven't yet been able to upgrade (because that software depends on a kernel feature that isn't available using the ancient kernel I have installed.) What this all means is that I will be taking a drive up to San Jose in the very near future (Monday night) to perform delicate surgery with a very large hammer. Once that is done, the spell checker will work.</p>

Any help to re-establish EDT as my time default will be appreciated. Since the FR downtime a few days ago, only PDT is available regardless of updating my "Preferences". TIA...

Calling all monthly donors to Free Republic! We need to recreate the monthly donor list, so I am starting from scratch. If you are a monthly donor and will allow your name to be listed, please either reply on the thread, or send me a FReepmail. I do not need the amount of your donation. I do this to recognize those who have chosen this method to help pay the bills and to encourage others to join. Some choose not to and that is their business and all methods of donation are being true to the conservative principle of taking...

I could not get on FR for several hours and just now brought it up. Anyone know why?

Anyone else getting proxy errors when hitting the back button and other tabs on FR? I've been getting these errors now for a couple days and have to get to pages through the history. Yes, I'm logged in. Yes, I know FR was down this morning but whatever that reason was it didn't fix the proxy problem.

I'm not sure if it's the same on everyone's computer, but by including the very last comment on each article, it makes for a longer search time when going through the articles to find one's of interest. Don't know if I'm the lone ranger here, but all I would like to see is the Title of the article, when, where and by whom it was published and the location as to where the article pertains. Assuming the article is about somewhere in the US, say the original story has a by line of Riverside. Then you have to try and...

What's the difference between "Articles" ("Latest Articles") and "Activity" ("Active Articles") in the News/Actvism Forum?
-
Where is the search function? Where can I go see what I've posted in the past? Where can I go to see what was posted to me in the past? What happened while I was napping?
-
There is this useless little box in the upper right hand corner that says POSTS:* and has an icon next to it that says go. I just saw that Arthur C Clarke died and wanted to verify any other threads. But I can't find a way to type in text to search. I agree the old search wasn't all that hot... but at least it was somewhat understandable.
