Autopsy Boston Bombing Suspect's Brain, Scientists Say Scientists are calling for an autopsy of one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects to see if he had brain damage. Though brain damage probably didn't play a role in the bombings, it may have contributed to other personality changes, researchers say. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, may have suffered from a type of brain damage caused by repeated impacts called chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, researchers say. Scientists believe CTE can cause emotional instability and impulse control. Tsarneev was a boxer for most of his life, and family members and peers described dramatic personality...

Lax marijuana laws may soon become a reality in the United States. ... National support is rising for this cause.[5] Cohen’s proposal comes as a bipartisan coalition of House representatives have sponsored the Respect Marijuana Laws Act.[6] It would exempt businesses that comply with state marijuana laws from federal prosecution.[7] Moreover, Kentucky senators Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul recently supported the passage of a regulatory framework allowing industrial hemp in their state.[8][9] McConnell is a figurehead for the GOP establishment. Paul represents the rising libertarian caucus. Ergo, the Republican Party may soon change its position on pot.

WASHINGTON – House Republican leaders abruptly pulled their fallback tax bill from the floor Thursday night, conceding that they did not have the votes to pass it. “The House did not take up the tax measure today because it did not have sufficient support from our members to pass,” Speaker John A. Boehner said in a statement. “Now it is up to the president to work with Senator Reid on legislation to avert the fiscal cliff.” The decision was a major setback for the speaker, who was pushing his so-called Plan B to prevent lower tax rates from expiring on...

DENVER (AP) — Sara Stevenson spends her working hours surrounded by Republicans, namely the married men who work alongside her in a Denver oil and gas firm company. But after hours and on weekends, she usually spends her time with other single women, and there's not a Republican in sight among the bunch. "There was just no way I could have supported any Republican this year," said Stevenson, 31. "They skew so much to the religious right. ... They focused so much on taxes. It's not something that women in my demographic really care about. I've never heard my friends...

The world of organ donation in Denmark is in turmoil. A documentary was aired earlier this month which showed family members reacting in anguish to the news that their 19-year-old daughter was brain dead after a car accident, agreeing to donate her organs and allowing doctors to turn off her respirator. About 1.7 million viewers tuned in to the heart-rending drama. But Carina Melchior did not die after her respirator was removed. She is now undergoing rehabilitation and may make a full recovery. About 500 people immediately removed their names from Denmark’s organ donor register. Doctors at Aarhus University Hospital...

Barack Obama won last night’s debate. Or to be more precise, Mitt Romney lost it. That’s obviously not the conventional view of the commentators or pollsters, who gave the GOP candidate a clear win. But that doesn’t matter. He still lost. There are three reasons why Romney experienced a soft implosion of his already tenuous electoral chances. First, there was no “gotcha moment”. Before the debate every political analyst, be they from the Left or Right, agreed that Romney had to land a knockout blow, which he didn’t. There was no major presidential gaffe. No glancing at watches, sighing or...

I agree with most of the letters in Talk Back about what we should do regarding the extremists in the Middle East. Therefore, we should cut off all financial aid to anyone affiliated with the tea party, an extremist group in the United States -- no bailouts, no subsidies, no Medicare, no Social Security checks, and certainly we shouldn't allow them to use public facilities such as roads and libraries. They shouldn't be allowed to use services provided by union members: police, firefighters, nurses, teachers, etc. [snip]

Hospitals could be allowed to keep patients with massive brain injuries alive solely to harvest their organs, under controversial plans being floated by the NHS. The 19 million people on the Organ Donation Register could also be given preference in the event of needing an organ, over those who are not. These are two of the proposals mooted in a consultation being carried out by NHS Blood and Transplant this summer. NHSBT is canvassing views from health professionals and the public on these and other ideas in the online survey, which closes on September 21. If put into practice they...

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) on Thursday asked Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to reverse the administration’s new immigration policy or threatened to file a lawsuit to overturn it in court. Napolitano was making her first appearance on Capitol Hill since the White House announced its policy changes, which will be carried out under her department. Testifying before the House Judiciary Committee, Napolitano vigorously defended the policy, which allows the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to exercise its prosecutorial discretion for certain illegal immigrants under 30 years of age who wish to defer their deportation from the country. “Representative, I will...

...boy recovers completely Although a team of four physicians insisted that his son was “brain-dead” following the wreck, Thorpe’s father enlisted the help of a general practitioner and a neurologist, who demonstrated that his son still had brain wave activity. The doctors agreed to bring him out of the coma, and five weeks later Thorpe left the hospital, having almost completely recovered.

Russia announces plans for zombie gun, prepare your bunkers Memories of the cold war have been raised from the dead this week with the confirmation from Russian officials they are testing an energy gun that would essentially turn people into zombies. The "psychotronic" gun would not only inflict pain but also attack the central nervous system leaving enemies scrambled. The weapon, which is said to use electromagnetic radiation, was announced by Russian defense minister Anatoly Serdyukov and was confirmed by Russian Prime Minister and President-elect Vladimir Putin. It has apparently in some form been tested for crowd control. If this...

Is farming brain-dead chickens more ethical? Architecture Student André Ford is proposing raising chickens for meat in vertical racks after severing their frontal cortexes, rendering them effectively brain-dead. It would be much, much more efficient, there's no doubt about that, but would it be any more ethical than current factory farms? The images of the conceptual chicken racks are fairly disturbing- the chickens are suspended, completely immobile, with their feet removed. Tubes feed water and nutrients directly into the them while other tubes carry away waste. The chickens themselves, though, aren't suffering at all, since their brains have been surgically...

The largely-unspoken, and uneasy, tension between the United States and China may have just gotten a little more apparent. A new video game sponsored the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) now allows players to target and shoot American commandos. Wired.com reports the new game, “Glorious Mission,” was developed by China’s Giant Network Technology Co. It sends “soldiers’ off to basic training and then sets them out on various missions. For the most part, it’s modeled after many American-made shooting games. But the comparisons may end at the graphics once you read this: But there’s one key difference between the American and...

Gloria Cruz, 56, underwent brain surgery after a tumor was discovered when she suffered a stroke on March 7 and was rushed to the Royal Darwin Hospital in Darwin, Northern Territory. Doctors told her husband Tani Cruz, 51, the case was “hopeless” and she would probably die within 48 hours following the surgery. After two weeks, a breathing tube was inserted in Mrs Cruz's mouth and the ventilator was turned off. Hospital staff were stunned when she woke from her coma three days later.

There are the birthers who question Obama’s nationality. And now there are…the brainers? It seems the latest theory surrounding Barack Obama is the presence of what appears to be scars on his head. Scars that, if true, haven‘t been explained and some say show he’s had brain surgery.

WEST BURLINGTON - God sometimes just has to show off. That is the only way Penny Link and Shirley Martinez can explain the fact that their father, 84-year-old Gene Stotts, is alive and lucid. "It had to be a miracle," Link said during an interview Thursday. Only three days earlier, Stotts' family and friends believed him to be brain dead and had begun thinking about funeral arrangements. The daughters and their father live only blocks from each other in Oquawka, Ill. But rather than spending Thanksgiving eating turkey at home, Stotts' family spent the day in the waiting room for...

A few days before this month's election, the federal government announced that California would receive an additional $715 million for its high-speed rail project, contingent on the money being spent quickly on a segment in the San Joaquin Valley. Why? You'd have to be terminally naive not to believe that the splashy announcement, made personally by an Obama administration official in Fresno, was to help an embattled local congressman, Democrat Jim Costa, stave off a very stiff Republican challenge. Costa, a longtime bullet train advocate, did, in fact, eke out a narrow re-election win. And last week, the California High-Speed...

Most Americans are not quite sure what to make of the sprawling right-wing Tea Party, which gradually emerged in 2009 and became a household name after it held nationwide Tea Party rallies on April 15, 2010, to protest paying taxes. Throwing tea overboard, as you may remember, is an important symbolic image of the colonial anger at Britain's policy of "taxation without representation." Many liberals and leftists dismissed the Tea Party as a temporary, knee-jerk response to the recession, high employment, home foreclosures, bankruptcies, and an African American president who had saved American capitalism by expanding the government's subsidies to...

Pelosi: Unemployment Checks Fastest Way to Create Jobs Unemployment benefits are creating jobs faster than practically any other program, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday. fox news Unemployment benefits are creating jobs faster than practically any other program, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday. Talking to reporters, the House speaker was defending a jobless benefits extension against those who say it gives recipients little incentive to work. By her reasoning, those checks are helping give somebody a job. "It injects demand into the economy," Pelosi said, arguing that when families have money to spend it keeps the economy churning. "It...

Trace of Thought Is Found in ‘Vegetative’ Patient BENEDICT CAREY February 3, 2010 He emerged from the car accident alive but alone, there and not there: a young man whose eyes opened yet whose brain seemed shut down. For five years he lay mute and immobile beneath a diagnosis — “vegetative state” — that all but ruled out the possibility of thought, much less recovery. But in recent months at a clinic in Liège, Belgium, the patient, now 29, showed traces of brain activity in response to commands from doctors. Now, according to a new report, he has begun to...

Coming off one of the most difficult weeks of his presidency, Barack Obama has beefed up his political staff and is expected to deliver an uncompromising State of the Union address. Aides said Sunday that the White House wasn't making any abrupt policy shifts, even as the message was retooled to focus more sharply on job creation. If anything, an unfinished agenda from 2009 will grow larger as, in addition to tackling health care and unemployment, the president presses for a bipartisan commission to tackle the budget deficit against resistance from Republicans. ... The re-emergence of David Plouffe took some...

It’s enough to make this particular female long for the repeal of the 19th Amendment… Senator Debbie Stabenow (D., Mich.) has a history of saying and doing silly things, like announcing “that she would conduct hearings and have radio station owners subpoenaed to testify so that the Senate could determine why people tune in Rush Limbaugh and tune out Air America,” the self-identified “liberal” radio station. And then there was the time she voted to extend Social Security benefits to illegal aliens. But Debbie Stabenow has outdone herself with her latest declaration. I will lay you odds, that the majority of Liberals will say that the guy who called is guilty, and that the clerk was just a victim of...

As the Constitution of the United States of America was drafted solely by racist, slaveowning members of the capitalist class, it is time to acknowledge that the document is morally corrupt and must be scrapped. In its place, a new order based upon the will of the oppressed worker's class will be drafted and enacted. 1) The "right" to "free" speech must be destroyed. The propaganda of the white christian capitalist class must be censured and silenced, violently if neccessary. To this end, ALL communication advocating religion, private property, and opression of the workers must be punished by execution. All...

Eating veggies shrinks the brain 14 Sep 2008 MELBOURNE: Scientists have discovered that going veggie could be bad for your brain-with those on a meat-free diet six times more likely to suffer brain shrinkage. Vegans and vegetarians are the most likely to be deficient because the best sources of the vitamin are meat, particularly liver, milk and fish. Vitamin B12 deficiency can also cause anaemia and inflammation of the nervous system. Yeast extracts are one of the few vegetarian foods which provide good levels of the vitamin. The link was discovered by Oxford University scientists who used memory tests, physical...

Jane Fonda’s reputation as a reprehensible traitor and left wing thug has been well chronicled for nearly 40 years. Unfortunately, Hanoi Jane survived her war on America and is still a poster child for the communist party in America. How many people get a second chance at life? Rae Kupferschmidt has. In mid-January, the 65-year-old former medical secretary suffered a devasting cerebral hemorrhage, a massive bleeding on the brain. "They thought I was dead," she says. In fact, on January 17th, doctors declared her "brain dead." One word, "dead," is handwritten on that date on the calendar in Rae's room at United Hospital in Saint Paul. In that same hospital room where Rae fielded questions from reporters on Tuesday. Clearly, Rae did not die, but even now, her family is not second-guessing the decision to disconnect life support. Medically,...

Whatever Hollywood says a presidential candidate is supposed to look like, Ron Paul isn't it. At 72, wearing mall-walking shoes and an inquisitive smile, he looks like a retired obstetrician, which he is. His platform is hardly from central casting, either. He not only wants U.S. troops home from Iraq, he wants them home from the rest of the planet. He wants to abolish an alphabet of federal agencies and the income tax, dismantle the Patriot Act, reconnect the dollar to the price of gold, decriminalize prostitution and call an end to the drug war. Senator Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) underwent surgery to help clear a blocked artery in his neck. Kennedy, 75, underwent an hour long operation on his left carotid artery at Massachusetts General Hospital. The procedure was performed by Dr. Bram Stoker, the hospital's chief of vascular surgery. “The blood flow to the senator’s brain was barely a trickle before the surgery,” Stoker said. “Essentially, his brain had been ‘running on empty’ for an indeterminate period of time.” Doctors speculated that the senator’s prodigious consumption of alcohol probably kept him alive. “Alcohol is a vasodilator,” Stoker said. “This apparently was enough to fuel...
