What does "Ping" mean?

I see so many people asking to be put on the 'ping list', what does that mean?

I also see that you can be 'pinged' if something you are interested in is posted. Are you notified someway?

Very good!  I'll have to try that one next time.  Liberals have a tendency to huddle together as they have difficulty thinking independently and this just might get them to fan out a bit more.

I think the joshing you're getting is NOT that you asked a question, but you posted it in the wrong category - News/Activism - in lieu of say .. Chat, Miscellaneous, Vanity.

And don't feel bad. Due to my pop-up blocker settings my ping (pager), the icon in the upper right hand corner, didn't work until about a month ago. So there I sat all these years thinking 'what's that for, it doesn't work?'

BTW: I didn't know what a "ping" was at the time. I thought I was the victim of a form of spam. Also BTW: I don't know how pinging is done, or why it's called pinging. I thought that was a term from sonar.
