- a motive (supposedly underlying all behavior) to increase one's own welfare. The opposite of altruism, which aims to increase another's welfare.

Example - A person who furthers his/her career by helping others in a charitable organization can said to be helping increase their own welfare. If that person were in such a postion and had no hope of advancement or benefits other than mere subsistance they would be an alturist.
