Only W CAN THINK HE KNOWS (ANN COULTER WAS RIGHT)

A small town in Indiana and a brief filed saying that Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided are entirely positive signs on first inspection, but the second reveals only a leaning and not a falling off on one side or the other. This is, of course, by White House design for the public understanding of Judge Roberts. Bush has exhibited his recurrent traits and examining G.W. Bush right now is the only way to know what really is in the heart of Judge Roberts.

Roberts is deliberately without much record. He is deliberately congenial and with friends all around. He is deliberately professionally competent, hard to make controversial – fine. I say "deliberately" on Bush's part – it is unknown if Judge Roberts has achieved his stealth status by his own design or by chance. Seemingly driven, popular success would encourage an individual to remain somewhat vanilla, but great strategists also sometimes hold their tongue and bide their time. We don't know, and that's the point.

I think the disgraceful attacks on Ann Coulter by our fellow PReepers prove my point that the "maintstram" of the Republican support throughout the nation is LESS conservative than they ysed to be & is moving leftward as time goes on. Folks just can't tolerate criticism anymore, even healthy criticism of our so-called "leaders". The GOP base believes that President Bush is as prefect as North Korea's righteous ruler, & any criticism from the Right is totally unacceptable. The 2 major political parties are moving closer & closer together, leaving true limited government conservatism behind...along w/ respecting the 9th & 10th Amendments, US sovereignty, LOCAL control of schools, abortion/drug/crime/welfare laws, etc. etc. etc.

For me it comes down to this.
Who is a better to judge.
Mark Levin or Ann?
_____________________________________________

For me it comes down to who is right about who he is. Coulter is right that he is a bit of a blank slate and it turns out some of the press for good or ill have been incorrectly filling in that slate. Didn't Hedgecock say today filling in for Limbaugh that Roberts is not a member of the Federalist Society?

But it still ultimately comes down to who is right about Roberts. I bet Coulter hopes she is wrong too.

Whoa! Dude?

What the heck are you talking about?

Some people disagreed with Ann. Get over it.

It's not like we don't agree with some of the other things she says. Or that we no longer think she's a piece of a$$ or anything.

Chill out.

I guess I missed the thread where we badmouthed Ann. I'm an Ann fan, I'm willing to give the president the benefit of the doubt on Roberts, but I share her disquiet.

I was hoping for an originalist. I think we've got a conservative, which is better than nothing. But I'm hoping he will turn out to be an originalist. And I want about 3 more.

to attack others for attacking a woman who routinely picks on people's physical characteristics? THAT, my friend, is the hypocritical treatment. Ann's a big girl; she can take it, or she should be able to, because she dishes it out plenty.

Amen to that. I didn't see the negative comments about Ann, but my first thought at reading this thread was the same as yours: Well, Ann dishes it out.

That's why I was never a fan (and never will be) of either Ann or Laura Ingraham. I do realize they're just political pundits, so it pays them to poke fun at people on the Left; they get more attention and sell more books that way. And, after all, that's what the Left does to the Right.

Still, they should be able to handle criticism, too.

It is an absolute disgrace that some posters have attacked her for her body shape; and, her marital status; and, her facial features; and, her purported drinking habits; ...

I wonder if she'd let me buy her a drink?

Where are the pictures???

I participated in the thread you discuss, as a major player. I did not see ANY personal attacks on Ann Coulter. I am certain that if there were such, they were few and far between.

I challenged Coulter because she is wrong in her analysis, as is the article at the top of this thread. Click below for a more accurate and honest discussion of Roberts.

Some of these descriptions you cite of being said of Ann I haven't even seen, infact, most of them. Which tells me you are exagerating the extent of it. If it were a real problem it would be apparent in all the threads on this matter, and it is not.

BTW, Were you here for the Terri Schiavo threads? How about the Noonan threads?

Ann has got off easy by comparison.

She's a tough girl. She's dished out hard rhetoric. Read her columns. Most of what has been said in rebuttal to her here as been mild in comparisons to her own rhetoric. If she can't take it, she should desist from slinging shots at everyone in her aim at the moment. My guess is that Ann can take it, and doesn't need you expressing indignant outrage.

The majority around here think she was WAY of base to suggest Roberts was Souter with nothing to back it up. We're entitled to tell her what we think of the opinion and slam the opinion down.

And, it seems to me, you are engaging in your OWN attacks by labeling people that approve of this choice "hatchet men". So, if people dissent from you and Ann, you are professional political assassins sent to take down obstacles huh?

And you are???
************
Someone who believes in civil discourse. Someone who believes that Christians and conservatives don't call a lady of Ann's reputation a "hooker". Someone who believes in loyalty to a friend. Someone who doesn't savage a friend, just to try to be hurtful when she doesn't say something I want to hear. Someone who doesn''t believe for a second that DUBYA would ever want those who blindly support him to engage in this vicious vitriol on a lady. Someone who believes being a gentleman still means something. Someone who is not a leeming.

Now look in the mirror, and decide who you are.

It is all very well to counsel us to walk in Ann's moccasins; I think we have to walk in President Bush's - And Senator Frist's - as well.

People have urged that Bush nominate to the Supreme Court everyone from Thomas Sowell (my personal favorite BTW) to Janice Rodgers Brown, to Ann Coulter herself. And there is the president and the Senate majority leader, faced with a SCOTUS resignation effective only on the confirmation of her successor - excluding the possibility of a recess appointment - and a Republican Senate majority which resembles nothing so much as a herd of cats.

The reality is that the MSM Party, a.k.a. the "Democratic" Party, is weaker than it has been but it is still able by its flattery and derision to position Conservatives as being "out of the' mainstream'." It takes courage for senators who aren't from red states to do things like change the filibuster rule. And even the senior senator from red state Arizona tugs the Senate to the left. Bottom line, the Senate doesn't have the stomach for a flat-out, out-of-the-closet conservative SCOTUS nominee.

Bush has done as much as he knew how to get a stronger Republican Senate majority, and he has gone from 50-50 to 55-45. But even at that, with the number of northeasterners in the Republican caucus Bush can't ignore McCain et al. So we have a stealth candidate. Like Souter - but also like Thomas. And there you are. We gotta hope for the best. Ann counsels nominating Ann Coulter to SCOTUS, and the political situation just doesn't sustain that aggressive an approach.

you make good points. I thought Ann's points were a bit strange. One possibility is the WH encouraged her to speak out like she did. Maybe they did. Maybe they didnt. But it would be excellent strategy to have the nominee criticized by some conservatives.

I don't recall seeing many posts as bad as you describe, but I definitely did not parse the entire thread. Perhaps it went too far, I don't really know. I happen to agree with much of what Ann said, to the extent that I passed her commentary around to my circle of hard right rudder conservative friends--loyal American conservatives all.

As far as FR is concerned, you seem to be reacting to something that has concerned many of us for at least the past 2 or 3 years, and that is a perceived gradual drift to the left toward center. This may at least partially explain an excess of criticism directed at Ann. What I have been seeing, and I am very sorry to have to say it, is a forum that is now far more amenable to GOP Big Tent RINOs/Liberals/Moderates than it is to conservatives (and by that I mean loyal American conservatives). And that's a real shame. Most of us, by far, want FR to continue to be a conservative site for conservatives.
