WASHINGTON - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton excoriated Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld at a Senate hearing Thursday, saying he is presiding over a "failed policy" in Iraq and Afghanistan. "Under your leadership there have been numerous errors in judgment that have led us to where we are," the New York Democrat said at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing. "We have a full-fledged insurgency and full-blown sectarian conflict in Iraq." The showdown between Clinton, a potential presidential candidate in 2008, and Rumsfeld, the public face of the Bush administration's war effort, included the strongest criticism of the Iraq war she has...

UC Santa Cruz Chancellor Denice Denton, apparently despondent over work and personal issues, died Saturday after she jumped from the roof of a 42-story San Francisco apartment building, police said. Denton's partner, Gretchen Kalonji, is listed as having an apartment in the building. Denton, a well-regarded engineer, had been named this spring in a series of articles examining UC management compensation. She had been criticized for an expensive university-funded renovation on her campus home, and for obtaining a UC administrative job for Kalonji. Denton, 46, died Saturday morning after jumping from the Paramount at Mission and Third streets, police said....

WILLIAM Jefferson Blythe III was born on August 19, 1946, in Hope, Ark. After his mother remarried, he took the family surname, Clinton. Clinton was a good student. He enjoyed playing the saxophone and even considered a professional musical career. While in high school, a fortuitous meeting with President John Kennedy led him to choose a life of public service.

I am curious why none of the media covers the most important aspect of the Malvo shootings. If you look at Newspapers on the dates when the shootings are underway you discover something I find quite interesting. The shootings begin to dominate the news the day before the debate on the Iraq war starts and they catch them the day after the declaration of war??? If you ask most people "do you remember the debate about starting the second Iraq war", they will all answer "yes of course". But if you followup with the question "name one point in the...

I recently received a reply to a post that stated: "This should be beneath a "freeper". Sad." So I asked.. what is it that makes a FReeper? My reply (and I will admit was tasteless) was also questioning. It stirred controversy and was removed? Why Moderators? Can you not tell me? Did it not meet with your "FReeper" mentality? According to all posted guidelines it should be listed but no, you chose to delete it. Yes.. I'm the first one IBTZ, I'm sure you'll nick me for speaking up..

All my life, I believed in Republican values -- individual responsibility and limited government. Then it happened; I found myself with a small child, unemployed and disabled. I turned to my church, and after years of regular tithes, suddenly I just wasn't their problem. My Republican friends? I was now a pariah to them. My only relief was to turn to government assistance for housing, food, and other needs and I was able to survive with dignity. So chalk me up as one who no longer drinks the GOP koolaid.

You guys have had total rule of the Country for years and years and here we are with $3 a gallon gas, a mess overseas, and crappy jobs here with wages depressed by unchecked illegal immigration. Stop whining about us -- you run the darn country, and you aren't doing jack. You've got about 6 months left before you are thrown out of Congress and we run it, and impeachment proceedings begin against your President. It will happen, too, as though the bluebloods and corporate fat cats who reside here might laugh at $3 a gallon gas, I am sure...

Unfit for Command Once again John Kerry sides with the enemy. Did I say enemy? Yes. Anyone, like Mary McCarthy, who uses her public trust to undermine the war on terrorism is the enemy. The Washington Post can wrap itself and its source in civil liberties, but the public rightly won't buy it. These prisons in Europe reportedly exist to interrogate and house al Qaeda terrorists. While people may disagree over the war in Iraq, almost nobody disagrees that al-Qaeda must be destroyed. The Democrat party is clearly lining up behind McCarthy now. The talking points have already been issued....

"Some look at the challenges in Iraq and conclude that the war is lost and not worth another dime or another day," President Bush said recently. Another time he said, "Some say that if you're Muslim you can't be free." "There are some really decent people," the president said earlier this year, "who believe that the federal government ought to be the decider of health care ... for all people." Of course, hardly anyone in mainstream political debate has made such assertions. When the president starts a sentence with "some say" or offers up what "some in Washington" believe, as...

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Prosecutors in Zacarias Moussaoui's death penalty trial sought Tuesday to unravel his claims that he knew nothing of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, arguing that al-Qaida members are carefully scripted to lie when caught. FBI agent Michael Anticev, testifying for a second day, offered the jury a primer on al-Qaida cover stories and the organization's techniques of deception when cell members are questioned. Moussaoui's lawyers are portraying him as a pathetic loner who dreamed of becoming a terrorist but was shut out of Sept. 11 planning and considered by one al-Qaida leader a "cuckoo in the...

Michele Naar-Obed knows she will not stop the war in Iraq by walking the streets of Baghdad, unarmed and unguarded, calling for an end to the violence, but she considers it her duty to try. She is 49 years old, a mother, a wife, a pacifist who can't stand to be passive. Soldiers put their lives on the line for their country; she will risk hers too, in pursuit of peace. Four of her colleagues in the pacifist movement were kidnapped in Baghdad late last month. The men — fellow members of Christian Peacemaker Teams — have been threatened with...

In Berkeley, where revolutionaries schooled in the '60s tilt against global capitalism and post-socialist state China is a growing field of academic study, radicals and scholars alike are coming to grips with a new biography that paints Chinese communist icon Mao Zedong as pure evil. In "Mao: The Unknown Story," authors Jung Chang and Jon Halliday portray Mao (1893-1976) as a cynical hedonist who rose to absolute power on Soviet strongman Josef Stalin's muscle and his willingness to crush millions of peasants in famine, war and sadistic repression. The authors, who spent a decade on the project and scoured private...

MARTINEZ -- A 22-year-old Martinez woman is in police custody after allegedly having Internet correspondence with someone who solicited sex from her and her 4-year-old daughter in exchange for $500, police said. Shannon Nicole Woods, of the 200 block of Thistle Circle, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of offering a minor under 16 for lewd and lascivious acts. She is being held on $50,000 bail, said Martinez police detective Sgt. Gary Peterson. Police are reviewing videotapes and the contents of Woods' laptop while determining whether they have enough evidence to charge her with a crime. Peterson said police received tips...

Fidel's ExecutionerBy Humberto FontovaFrontPageMagazine.com | October 14, 2005 This is the fourth article in our "Leftwing Monsters" series, the first of which featured Humberto Fontova's profile of Fidel Castro. "Leftwing Monsters" is a feature of www.discoverthenetworks.org where the entire series will be archived -- The Editors. In August of 1960, a year and a half after Che Guevara entered Havana ahead of his "column" of "guerrillas," Time magazine featured the revolutionary comandante on its cover and crowned him the "Brains of the Cuban Revolution." A small town in Indiana and a brief filed saying that Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided are entirely positive signs on first inspection, but the second reveals only a leaning and not a falling off on one side or the other. This is, of course, by White House design for the public understanding of Judge Roberts. Bush has exhibited his recurrent traits and examining G.W. Bush right now is the only way to know what really is in the heart of Judge Roberts. Roberts is deliberately without much record. He is deliberately congenial and with friends all around. He...

To the happy few who may read this...I used to post here as Pat The Postman. Never insulted anyone. Just presented facts. Paid respect to everyone. Yesterday I participated in a highly interesting thread about the War On Iraq/Terrorism. Today I posted a link to an official report from the UK from the Chatham House, a deeply respected think tank, held in high esteem all over the world. And what happened? Well, all my posts were removed, and the thread about the Chatham House report was pulled within a minute. This is interesting. What's the matter? There is but one...

June 26, 2005 Guest Viewpoint: The party's over for betrayed Republican By James Chaney As of today, after 25 years, I am no longer a Republican. I take this step with deep regret, and with a deep sense of betrayal. I still believe in the vast power of markets to inspire ideas, motivate solutions and eliminate waste. I still believe in international vigilance and a strong defense, because this world will always be home to people who will avidly seek to take or destroy what we have built as a nation. I still believe in the protection of individuals and...

I am very worried for Karl Rove. Ir appears he is going to jail, and I don't want him to end up in a bad place where bad things could happen to him (what were those bad federal prisons referred to in the movie "Office Space?") Can we start a petition to give to his sentencing judge to have him sent to a nice prison? Maybe he coould go where Martha Stewart went. Or is that just for women. Let's make sure he goes to a nice place, though.

Horrible Monster The following is quoted directly from the e-mail I received at about five a.m. today, Thursday, July 14, 2005: After Duncan spent an afternoon and evening raping Dylan and Shasta over and over again(...)he decided to have some fun with the campfire. First, he put Shasta's hand into the fire, so she could feel the pain of fire. Then he put Dylan's hand into the fire so he could feel the pain of fire. Then he put Shasta's hand in the fire again. And then Dylan's. Then he drug Shasta's whole body right through the fire. Then he...

Missouri State Trooper Shot Nine Times During Traffic Stop The Associated Press Published: May 30, 2005 KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A man who recently was fired from his job at an elementary school is accused of shooting a state highway patrol trooper nine times after a traffic stop. Trooper Brandon Brashear, 27, of Grain Valley, remained hospitalized Monday in critical but stable condition. Authorities said Brashear was shot by the suspect early Saturday as the trooper got out of his car. The suspect then chased him into the highway median, continuing to shoot him with a 9 mm assault...

Let's face i, governments and unions are agents of THEFT and to a large degree, they are the bagmen of the middle class. They distort the markets for labor and trade so that some people are able to TAKE more resources out of the pockets of the owning class than they are entitled to. It makes me sick. Most of the people in the “middle class” in America have no business having what they have. If the just, God-given market forces were left alone, those thieves would be living in the shacks their productivity entitles them to and the wealthy...

For those hoping that a second term would cool the seething resentment of George Bush and his supporters over having to live in a democratic society, it was a sobering moment: Bush Resubmits 20 Nominations for Federal JudgeshipsDec. 23 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. President George W. Bush will resubmit 20 federal judicial nominations, reigniting a battle with Democrats who accuse the nominees of hostility to abortion rights and the environment. The list includes seven of the 10 candidates whose nominations failed during Bush's first term because of Democratic filibusters that blocked Senate confirmation votes. Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid called the nominees...

A HIGH Court clerk from Amersham has spoken of his "deep regret" after being convicted of secretly filming up women's skirts. Michael Hill, 59, blamed the death of his mother for taking pictures of victims with a video camera hidden inside a black holdall. He had taken 560 separate shots after his offending began in 1996, a court heard last week. Hill, a court "associate" who worked with some of the country's top judges for more than 40 years, admitted to four counts of outraging public decency and three counts of taking indecent images of a child between June 1,...

Many argue that communism will never be possible because of "human nature". The essence of this false argument is the belief that a communist society would consist of an all-powerful central government that would tell everybody what to do--and would therefore undermine the creative initiative of individuals and the search for happiness. • This argument is based on two false assumptions: (1) It assumes that a communist society will look like the former Soviet Union, or the current China, North Korea, etc (ie: corrupt police states with a feudal-style ruling class) (2) It assumes that people will only work in...

We want a country where we can burn the heretics, put the gays in the labor camps, and put bibles back in our schools to get that horrible science out. Let's stop preaching this "democracy" nonsense. March 24, 2005 OP-ED COLUMNIST DeLay, Deny and Demagogue By MAUREEN DOWD h my God, we really are in a theocracy. Are the Republicans so obsessed with maintaining control over all branches of government, and are the Democrats so emasculated about not having any power, that they are willing to turn the nation into a wholly owned subsidiary of the church? The more dogma-driven activists, self-perpetuating pols and ratings-crazed broadcast media prattle about "faith," the less we honor the credo that a person's relationship with God should remain a private matter. As the Bush White House desperately maneuvers in Iraq...

I post on several forums and avidly and sternly denounce the war crimes of the Bush Administration. Hello fellow conservatives I am a junior at the University of North Carolina and I am planning on going to Cancun for spring break. Thomas still a bad choice, Hill says Wednesday, February 23, 2005 By Kyla King The Grand Rapids Press GRAND RAPIDS -- In the 13 years since Anita Hill testified during Senate confirmation hearings about alleged sexual harassment by then-Supreme Court Justice nominee Clarence Thomas, she has written books, taught at two universities and penned numerous opinion pieces. And although she will be in Grand Rapids on Thursday to speak about race and gender issues, she expects people also will want to talk about her role in one of the biggest political controversies of the time. "It was a big event,...

Activist's Arrest At President Bush's press conference yesterday, ABC News (search) reporter Terry Moran (search) described the case of a Jordanian activist, Ali Hattar, who Moran said had been arrested and charged with slander for promoting a boycott of U.S. goods. Moran called it an "abuse of human rights," and invited the President to condemn it, saying, "If you won't, sir, then what ... do your fine words [about freedom] mean?" President Bush said he was unaware of the case. He was in good company. The Hattar case appears never to have been mentioned by any news outlet in the...

In the last few days there has been widespread and grossly inaccurate media coverage concerning my analysis of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, coverage that has resulted in defamation of my character and threats against my life. The piece circulating on the internet was developed into a book, On the Justice of Roosting Chickens. Most of the book...
