I always wondered what happened to those venues after the Olympics were over.

The joy of living and working in Brooklyn is that I don't have to deal with the subway. I get to drive my truck to most destinations. Except when I have to go into Manhattan, then I have to take the sub.

The problem with New York city is that in the outer boroughs mass transit sucks. The subways all head towards Manhattan and there are no cross borough lines to connect the lines. The result is that if you don't have a car in the outer boroughs, getting around is a pain.

My fav lines are still the 1/9 for non-express service. Sure its crowded by there are several trains running. The 6 is ALWAYS packed, being the only local on the East Side.

The N(ever) and R(arely) going through Brooklyn are the WORST. Poor service, frequent stops due to "congestion" and the most run-down stations in the city.

In terms of availability and frequency, I think that the N gets a bad rap.

Just based on anecdotal evidence, the N is pretty good in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn.

As for the R, my preferred method is intensive prayer.

I think that God is the only person who can ameliorate that situation.

I agree that the system is way too Manhattan-centric.

Consider doing a "Compare and Contrast". Montreal's subway system? Clean and well-lighted. London's Tube? Is it still filthy doity? :o)

You'd have to ask a Brit, or someone who travels frequently.

According to my father, the Montreal trains are very good, but he hasn't been back since the early 70s, so it might have changed since then.

I really don't know.

We have a few busses: they are horrible.

The underground in Toronto impresses me. So does London.

I'll take your word for it, though I never suspected that such a thing as Camp Quidnunc existed.

I haven't been to London for five years or so, but then the Underground varied a lot from station to station and line to line.

The trains and platforms of the really busy lines like District were not as clean as the less-busy lines like Bakerloo and Victoria.

The things that run around Ann Arbor call themselves "The Ride".

When i was a kid, there was "SEMTA" ( South East Michigan Transportation Authority) More busses, but they were cheap, safe and went everywhere.

Also timely. I rode them a lot.

I guess I feel less nervous on buses.

The subway is another matter entirely.
