New medical research suggests that owning a cat could double the risk of developing schizophrenia.
To reach that conclusion, scientists in Australia analyzed 17 studies published over the last 44 years from 11 different countries, including the US and the UK.
“Our findings support an association between cat exposure and an increased risk of broadly defined schizophrenia-related disorders,” the authors wrote in their analysis, published in the journal Schizophrenia Bulletin.
“We found that individuals exposed to cats had approximately twice the odds of developing schizophrenia,” wrote the research team from the Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research.
Schizophrenia is a complex mental illness that often runs in families, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Cats are pretty schizophrenic. Maybe it is catching.
Perhaps there is a genetic predisposition to toxoplamosis in some people.

There's a lot of crazy cat ladies out there so there seems to be a correlation.
The link is not with cats but with their parasites.
Or… Do schizophrenics tend to like cats? Correlation dos not mean causation.
It’s from cleaning their litter boxes and still finding your bedroom closet’s carpent stinks of cat pee.
I know a lot of women who hold conversations with their cats. Comes with being married to a psychiatrist!
Keep your cat indoors and you won’t have a problem.
was a fella in our church who had schizophrenia- he was a genius on the organ and piano, always loved listening to him play- but he was really kind of sketchy person- he had dozens of cats- We’d bring over food to him when he needed it, (He wasn’t too good with money and would run out) and he would open the door and you’d get bowled over by the smell- The church however took pretty good care of him-
Cat doors are a good thing. Mine go outside to potty.

Correlation is not causation. I’ve owned cats for 25 years and I’m fine.
