A very rich votive deposit made up of at least sixty terracotta statuettes, protomes and female busts, oil lamps and small vases, bronze fragments, mixed with a large number of bones: this is what emerged during the excavations in the Valley of the Temples, in House VII b, which forms part of the housing complex north of the temple of Juno. The campaign is entirely financed and supported by the Sicilian Region through the Archaeological Park, directed by Roberto Sciarratta, and is led by the archaeologist Maria Concetta Parello. The finds allow us to understand the dynamics of the destruction of Akragas in 406 BC by the Carthaginians, when the inhabitants had to flee in exodus towards Gela leaving, as Diodorus Siculus writes...
The votive deposit, which would appear to be placed above the destruction levels of the house, could tell the story of the moment in which the objects that compose it were recovered by the Akragantines after the destruction. To define with certainty the function of the interesting deposit it will be necessary to continue the research, paying maximum attention to the stratigraphic connections between the deposit and the levels of life and abandonment of the house. Meanwhile, the restoration of the numerous finds recovered has already been planned in anticipation of their immediate valorisation.
"It is a scientific intervention that we have supported in recent years" - says the director of the Parco Valle dei Templi Roberto Sciarratta - "and which immediately gave important results. In the excavation area, which gives us a detailed reading of the historical events, a large inhabited sector had already been identified, i.e. houses from the Greek age, the main phase of which ends with the conquest and destruction of the city by the Carthaginians".
