McDonald’s Franchises in Kentucky Forced 10-Year-Olds to Work Until 2 a.m. — Without Pay

The US government slapped three McDonald’s franchises in Kentucky with more than $200,000 in fines after an investigation found they employed minors, including a 10-year-old who was illegally made to work until 2 a.m. and who was allowed to operate a deep fryer — all without getting paid.

A franchise in Louisville employed two 10-year-old workers who were among some two dozen minors under the age of 16 to work across 10 McDonald’s locations owned by Louisville-based Bauer Food LLC, it was alleged.

The minors were tasked with preparing and distributing food orders, cleaning the store, manning the drive-thru windows, operating a register, and manning the deep fryer, which is only permitted for employees over the age of 16, according to a statement by the US Department of Labor. “Investigators also determined two 10-year-old children were employed – but not paid – and sometimes worked as late as 2 a.m.,” according to the feds.

Those children were learning the dignity of labor and fast-food efficiency.

Are these family of the franchise owners?
I’m trying to understand anyone having their kid work for someone else until 2AM for free.

I guess they were the children of the owners of the franchise.

When I was young (pre-16), I looked for part time jobs and was usually paid in cash. No big deal back then. Mowing lawns for neighbors, trimming trees and bushes, loaded/unloaded trucks for a guy who had a salvage business.

Now its considered child abuse to let kids have jobs.

I would bet, seeing as this is Kentucky, there is a good chance the owner/manager was just providing these kids with welcome opportunity, and was paying them cash under the table as they could not be legally employed. I dont think even 10 year olds were voluntarily working for no pay.

Same. Not sure if I may have stopped when I went to college. I later tarred driveways. I also caddied for a while in high school and college. We were paid in cash, and no one declared their income.

Children of the night manager, not owner.

Single parent, or two parents working nights. Really not healthy for 10 y.o. to be up until 2 am, they probably aren’t doing well at school.

And yet this may have been the parent’s best alternative.

10-years-old?? That’s outrageous!

I mean, at that age, a child can decide to surgically change their gender, of course, but working at a McDonald’s doing these tasks, that’s totally unacceptable. Nice of the government to step in and stop this crime against humanity.

When I was 4, I learned the value of a work ethic. I had my first job as a coal polisher. (At least that’s the story I told my children when they didn’t want to do their chores.)

Were these 10 year olds American citizens?

Truth is, they were doing a damn good job, and learning something about work. Now, their momma ought to be ashamed she didn't pay them.

"That includes two 10-year-olds who weren't paid, and sometimes had to work as late as 2 a.m. They prepared food, cleaned, worked the drive-thru, register, and one was even allowed to use the deep fryer.

“Under no circumstances should there ever be a 10-year-old child working in a fast-food kitchen around hot grills, ovens and deep fryers,” Wage and Hour Division District Director Karen Garnett-Civils said."

Kids are out of school more days then they are in school.

I was working for my dad’s company at 12. Probably before.

It was a glass company. Somewhat more dangerous than operating a deep fryer.
