REYKJAVIK (Reuters) - Thousands of Icelanders lined up at McDonald's restaurants to order their last Big Macs before the U.S. fast-food chain abandons the crisis-hit island at midnight Saturday due to soaring costs. The world's largest fast-food company said earlier this week that all three of its restaurants in Iceland, operated by franchisee Jon Ogmundsson, would shut down October 31. The outlets have been packed since the announcement, with lines at one restaurant on the east side of the city backing up out the door and onto the street. At lunchtime Friday the outlet's parking lot was full and staff...

REYKJAVIK (Reuters) – McDonald's Corp (MCD.N) will shutter its business in Iceland because it is too expensive for the franchise to operate after the country's financial crisis. The world's largest fast-food company said on Monday that all three of its restaurants in Iceland, operated by franchisee Jon Ogmundsson, would stop operating at midnight on October 31. Ogmundsson has run the McDonald's restaurants since 2004. He told Reuters that the decision to close the restaurants was mainly due to the severe depreciation of the Icelandic krona and high taxes on imported food. Instead, he

McDonald's posted a stronger-than-expected quarterly profit on Thursday, helped by cost controls and rising sales in all regions, and expects same-store sales to remain positive in October even though people eat out less often. Shares of the world's largest hamburger chain rose 2 percent in premarket trading. McDonald's [MCD 58.33 --- UNCH ] and some other fast-food chains have been outperforming other restaurant companies due to their lower-priced fare, but rising unemployment is erasing that advantage. McDonald's third-quarter net income rose to $1.26 billion, or $1.15 a share, from $1.19 billion, or $1.05 a share, a year earlier. Analysts on...

Commerce: Is it just us, or does McDonald's opening at the Louvre sound ... just wrong? Nothing against the fast food giant. But in the land of cordon bleu, where are the French entrepreneurs to sell there instead? Food snobs, of course, will exclaim "quelle horreur!" at the thought of the odor of fries wafting through the high temple of French culture, one of the world's greatest art museums. The thought of a Mona Lisa Extra Value Meal, as one satirical Web site put it, would make anyone shudder. Fortunately, it won't be like that. McDonald's will open its 1,142nd...

A Chicago man has filed a lawsuit against McDonald's Corporation after he says he swallowed a gold earring in his sandwich. The man purchased the sandwich on Aug. 11 from the McDonald's at Chicago's Navy Pier, according to the suit filed on Wednesday in the circuit court of Cook County, Ill. The plaintiff, Boguslaw Nedza, claims after he ate the sandwich "the earring became lodged in his throat and stomach and efforts to remove it by emergency personnel were unsuccessful." Nedza is now suing McDonald's for the injuries he sustained from ingesting the jewelry.

The map above is a visualization of the contiguous United States, colored by distance to the nearest McDonald’s, courtesy of Stephen Von Worley (via Felix Salmon): For maximum McSparseness, we look westward, towards the deepest, darkest holes in our map: the barren deserts of central Nevada, the arid hills of southeastern Oregon, the rugged wilderness of Idaho’s Salmon River Mountains, and the conspicuous well of blackness on the high plains of northwestern South Dakota. There, in a patch of rolling grassland, loosely hemmed in by Bismarck, Dickinson, Pierre, and the greater Rapid City-Spearfish-Sturgis metropolitan area, we find our answer....

FAST food giant McDonald's has been named as Britain's most-hated brand in a new survey by marketing experts. The American burger chain – unpopular with 46 per cent of consumers – topped a list of the least-liked brands which featured some of the country's biggest names. Tesco was second most hated in the poll for Marketing magazine, followed by Coca-Cola and the discount fashion chain Primark. However, the research showed some of the most well-known brands also attracted consumers in equal measure. Tesco and Coca-Cola were also voted Britain's sixth and seventh most loved brands respectively. Both were more loved...

Continuing this weekend's unintentional theme of "toddlers and food service," today we bring you the sad tale of a Quincy, Mass. 23-month-old whose parents are suing Dunkin' Donuts after he was burned by a hash brown. A hash brown that fell out of his mouth and onto his neck. "It took only seconds for the extremely high temperature of the interior portion of the food item to severely burn and blister (Cullen's) skin," attorney Joseph K. Curran Jr. wrote in a complaint filed in Norfolk Superior Court. Before handing the hash brown to her son to eat, the boy's mother,...

(McDonald’s buys millions of pounds of hoki each year for Filet-O-Fish sandwiches. Now, conservationists say the New Zealand fish is being depleted.) Ever wonder what kind of fish end up in a Filet-O-Fish sandwich? The answer is usually hoki, a bug-eyed sea creature found deep in the Pacific waters of New Zealand. But it turns out that exporting millions of pounds of the fish each year -- McDonald’s alone at one time used 15 million pounds annually -- is depleting the hoki supply and pitting conservationists against commercial interests. “We have major concerns,” said Peter Trott, the fisheries program manager...

Jeff Foxworthy once said that there is only one answer to the question "Does my butt look big in this dress?" That Answer is "Do I have to answer that question?" Foxworthy also made an observation about large women wearing Spandex, "If your bottom looks like two raccoons wrestling around in a fifty pound sack of feed, you are NOT 'juicy'!" PETA, the People for ethical treatment of animals, would disagree, if you your bottom looks like two raccoons wrestling...its because you are not a vegetarian. The radical animal right's group is continuing in its effort to upset just about...

Kids hoping to grab a Happy Meal from McDonald's might end up with PETA's Unhappy Meal instead. The animal rights organization lifted its moratorium on the McCruelty Campaign this year and since June has distributed Chicken McCruelty Unhappy Meals to McDonald's customers outside about a dozen restaurants around the country. "McDonald's markets its food to children by packaging it in brightly colored boxes with toys," Lindsay Rajt, a spokeswoman for PETA, tells Slashfood. "But most kids really love animals, and if they knew that McDonald's suppliers were breaking the wings and legs of gentle animals like chickens, I think that...

CNN) -- When James Huberty walked into a McDonald's restaurant 25 years ago this month, he knew he was going to kill somebody. He probably didn't know his murderous rampage would change how police departments work. Witnesses said the unemployed welder and security guard started shooting immediately, and kept on shooting for 77 minutes until a police sniper on a nearby rooftop ended the siege with a bullet through Huberty's heart. When the carnage ended, Huberty and 21 victims -- including grandmothers, an infant, children on bicycles and teenage McDonald's employees -- lay dead inside and outside the restaurant. Nineteen...

No, "over salting" isn't code for anything nasty. The 20-year-old McDonald's worker literally spilled salt on the hamburger meat that was used to make a "Big 'N Tasty" that was served to a Georgia police officer. The police officer says the burger made him sick—and Kendra Bull, 20, spent a night in jail because of it. According to Kendra, she accidentally spilled too much salt on the hamburger meat, tried to remove it, notified her coworkers, then took a break. During the break she says she ate a burger made from the salty meat.

Starbucks is still losing customers, but not as many as it has for the last two quarters. These days, that qualifies as welcome news. On Tuesday, Starbucks, which is based in Seattle, reported that net income in the third quarter, ended June 28, was $151.5 million, or 20 cents a share, compared with a net loss of $6.7 million and a penny a share in the same period last year. RAPID CITY, S.D. - Custer rides again, although he's atop a plastic motorcycle and in a McDonald's Happy Meal box. And that doesn't sit well with some in the Native American community. Lt. Col. McDonald's included characters from the movie as toys in its kid-sized Happy Meals. The fast food chain's...

Who knows what nightmares haunt the makers of a dream brand in trouble? Maybe trouble is too strong a word to describe Starbucks' situation. Maybe the worst nightmare is this: What if Starbucks is an artifact of an economy that's not coming back?...

With the nation in its deepest recession in decades, why would McDonald's pick this moment to launch a $4 burger? BEIRUT: McDonalds became the latest target of the boycott campaign against pro-Israeli businesses Tuesday when a couple of dozen activists representing the Union of Lebanese Democratic Youth (ULDY) picketed outside the fast-food chain's Hamra location across from the American University of Beirut (AUB). "You're being fed Palestinian meat," they continued. ULDY regularly calls for protests outside large restaurants and businesses that the group accuses of contributing directly or indirectly to...

Washington, D.C.—With the lack of parenting ever more prevalent today in America, Barack Obama, D-IL, is taking a hard stand against the fast food industry. He is proposing a plan to increase the corporate tax by 20% on fast food restaurants. The proposal, if implemented, would begin on June 1, 2009, in time for summer break, when all the responsibility of parenting seems to go out the window. Since the demonization of smokers, alcohol drinkers and gas guzzling consumers has been accomplished, the Obama administration is now going after a more sinister demon: Fast Food. The feeling of the administration...

For months, drug dealers sold an array of prescription drugs out of three Downtown McDonald's restaurants, operating in daylight and lingering for hours without buying food, an undercover police detective said. The detective offered glimpses into a "lucrative" drug trade yesterday, a day after an employee of the Smithfield Street store was arrested for selling drugs in a rest room, and District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr. threatened to take legal action against the restaurants. Police Chief Nate Harper urged other Downtown business owners to take heed, saying they are "fully responsible to patrol their property." More than 100 people...

Nigel Haskett was working at a McDonalds in Arkansas last summer when he witnessed Perry Kennon, a criminal with a long record beating a woman. The assailant, later identified as Perry Kennon, went outside. Haskett also stepped outside and stood at the door to keep Kennon from re-entering the restaurant. Kennon retrieved a gun from...

Golden Arches may shine bright in quarter By William Spain, MarketWatch Last update: 2:01 p.m. EST Jan. 23, 2009 WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- In the early stages of what is already looking like a largely downbeat season of quarterly financial reports from U.S. companies, it is almost a given that one iconic American company will still shine: McDonald's Corp. What is a rational American to do during tumultuous economic times? Well, typically, you get sloshed. The Mayo Clinic tells us, "High levels of stress, anxiety or emotional pain can lead some people to drink alcohol to block out the turmoil." So predictably, the sales of spirits, beer and wine have risen as the Dow Jones has tanked. Drinking can be fun. But other behavioral trends set off by recession have been downright unsightly. For one, we have witnessed a legion of once-enlightened Americans turning to a host of deviant activities. Instead of buying tree seedlings and eco-friendly hair gel,...
