Don't Let Yourself Get Tangled Up by These 4 Quantum Mechanics Misconceptions

1. A cat can be dead and alive

Obviously, a cat is nothing like an individual photon in a controlled lab environment, it is much bigger and more complex.

Any coherence that the trillions upon trillions of atoms that make up the cat might have with each other is extremely short-lived.

This does not mean that quantum coherence is impossible in biological systems, just that it generally won't apply to big creatures such as cats or a human.

2. Simple analogies can explain entanglement

Quantum particles are just mysteriously correlated in ways we can't describe with everyday logic or language – they don't communicate while also containing a hidden code, as Einstein had thought.

So forget about everyday objects when you think about entanglement.

3. Nature is unreal and 'non-local'

Bell's theorem is often said to prove that nature isn't "local", that an object isn't just directly influenced by its immediate surroundings. Another common interpretation is that it implies properties of quantum objects aren't "real", that they do not exist prior to measurement.

However, most options on the table – for example, time flowing backward, or the absence of free will – are at least as absurd as giving up on the concept of local reality.

4. Nobody understands quantum mechanics

We understand it extremely well, to a point where we can predict quantum phenomena with high precision, simulate highly complex quantum systems, and even start to build quantum computers.

Yeah, and a particle can be in two places at the same time. My energy level is higher when I’m dead than when I’m alive. There is no such thing as free will. I could go on and on with the insane asylum quantam mechanics.

Being able to solve quantum field equations says nothing about having an intuitive understanding of what they actually mean.

It’s very different from understanding Newton’s laws of motion. You can get an intuitive understanding of even the non-intuitive parts (even though when I was young, I thought rockets had to push against the atmosphere).

The cat thought experiment follows exactly the same rules as the quantum particle entanglement does. Using a truly random event such as radioactive decay to determine whether the poison vial is broken or not ensures that the state of the cat and the poison vial are entangled in the box system which hides our view inside.

We don’t know which state the cat (particle) or the poison vial (particle) is in until we observe at least one of them.

If we could divide the box and send just the vial half to a distant galaxy someone there could open it and see the random state of the vial, either intact or broken. They would immediately know the state of the cat (dead/alive) even though it was light years away. The entangled cat and vial states share the same probability density matrix and the state of one is correlated with the state of the other. It’s not spooky, just a little cruel for a thought experiment

You’re lucky. Before breakfast I have to wrestle with these pesky concepts. They’re like an eight armed gorilla, you think you’re making progress but behind your back it’s getting me in a chokehold. I’ve tried avoidance but it follows me like a shadow. I’ve cancelled my subscription to Popular Quantum Mechanics but they kept on sending it. I starting to feel like I’m in a quantum entanglement. I’ve started wearing tin foil hats to keep the photons and neutrons from penetrating my brain but I can feel them inside. Gnawing away at my gray matter like termites.
