Astronomy Picture of the Day - Dark Matter in a Simulated Universe

Explanation: Is our universe haunted? It might look that way on this dark matter map. The gravity of unseen dark matter is the leading explanation for why galaxies rotate so fast, why galaxies orbit clusters so fast, why gravitational lenses so strongly deflect light, and why visible matter is distributed as it is both in the local universe and on the cosmic microwave background. The featured image from the American Museum of Natural History's Hayden Planetarium Space Show Dark Universe highlights one example of how pervasive dark matter might haunt our universe. In this frame from a detailed computer simulation, complex filaments of dark matter, shown in black, are strewn about the universe like spider webs, while the relatively rare clumps of familiar baryonic matter are colored orange. These simulations are good statistical matches to astronomical observations. In what is perhaps a scarier turn of events, dark matter -- although quite strange and in an unknown form -- is no longer thought to be the strangest source of gravity in the universe. That honor now falls to dark energy, a more uniform source of repulsive gravity that seems to now dominate the expansion of the entire universe.

Maybe itā€™s dark because thereā€™s nothing there.

It blocks various light rays; I think that’s why it’s called dark. The disturbing idea is that “space” is not really empty.

I honestly donā€™t understand the entire concept of dark matter. They say it makes up a huge part of our universe and itā€™s everywhere holding everything together.

If thatā€™s true then why isnā€™t the stuff all over my lawn?

I didn’t think it was dark but cosmologists have to add it to their equations to make things balance out. Boo! Happy Halloween!

Haha, the term “baryonic matter” is what’s messing with my head right now.

Dark matter - It’s the politicians. They are massive, but not bright at all.

You know, if the universe were an eruption of space and time within a black hole we would be still surrounded by the stuff of the black hole on all sides around us. Would that look like dark matter?

And to those on the outside of the black hole we were in would they see a black hole so utterly massive (puffed up bury our universeā€™s presence) that it defied any method by which a black hole in the universe they know to eat itā€™s way to the apparent size in the time they assume has been available?

Side note: astronomers infer the size and mass of black holes based on their event horizon ā€¦ but an expanding space/time within a black hole could possibly puff it up without having to eat that much to get to that size. And we do have astronomers wondering about black holes far larger than they think should be possible.

Some years ago I postulated that the rest of the universe was trying to get away from Earth, which is the epicenter of dumb in the cosmos.

And that ā€œdark matterā€ represented the parts that could hide themselves from us as well as move farther away.

Can I send the German Shepherd across the street there? Another universe would be a great place for him ... :-)

The cockroaches eat it. Same reason your yard isn't full of dog poo.

Some say our universe is a certain age because that is what we can ‘see.’ Who is to say what is beyond what we can ‘see’ today? Tomorrow, or in 200 years, we may see further, more, etc. The Earth may be about 4, 5 billion years old. The universe we ‘know’, we can ‘see’ may be 13-15 billion years old. Some of the stuff we know and see is backed up by rock-solid, real science. Some is conjecture and extrapolation from things we know. Then, we have speculation, maybe, perhaps, etc. Some of the maybe items might someday be more provable; others not. God gave us these amazing minds and brains, to use, to help others, and to explore this magnificent universe.

Yeah, the particle guys might have to yield some ground on the next step. This is the fabric of spacetime. It has physical properties. A highway is not a car, but it does exist.

Like multidimensional invisible stuff that could go thump in the night? No PPDs apply.

"Some say our universe is a certain age because that is what we can ā€˜see.ā€™"

I've read that astrophyicists, cosmologists, astronomers deduced the universe age from calculating the speed of galaxies/matter moving away from each other using the red shift. Then they just do the math in reverse. Walla! Basketball size big bang 14 billion years ago that appeared out of nowhere.

So now they say there is not enough matter to account for those calculations and make up dark matter, which only means it's dark because they can't prove it exists. But what do I know? It appears that Aristotle, Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, Newton didn't know all they think they did in their time. Even Einstein and Stephen Hawkings theories are now being questioned, amongst others.

I believe Intelligent Design or Intelligent Roll of Dice is behind it all.
