WMO certifies Megaflash lightning extremes
World Meteorological Organization (WMO) ^ | 24 June 2020 | Press Release Number: 26062020

Posted on 07/11/2020 11:24:51 PM PDT by SunkenCiv

The new records for “megaflashes”, verified with new satellite lightning imagery technology, more than double the previous values measured in the United States of America and France. The findings were published by the American Geophysical Union’s Geophysical Research Letters ahead of International Lightning Safety Day on 28 June.

WMO’s Committee on Weather and Climate Extremes, which maintains official records of global, hemispheric and regional extremes found that:

The world’s greatest extent for a single lightning flash is a single flash that covered a horizontal distance of 709 ± 8 km (440.6 ± 5 mi) across parts of southern Brazil on 31 October 2018. This is equivalent to the distance between Boston and Washington DC in the United States of America or between London and the border of Switzerland near Basel.

The greatest duration for a single lightning flash is 16.73 seconds from a flash that developed continuously over northern Argentina on 4 March 2019...

The previous record for the longest detected distance for a single lightning flash was for 321 km (199.5 miles) on 20 June 2007 across the U.S. state of Oklahoma. Both the previous and new record used the same maximum great circle distance methodology to measure flash extent.

The previous record for duration was for a single lightning flash that lasted continuously for 7.74 seconds on 30 August 2012 over Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France.

That area is just west of the ‘south Atlantic anomaly’.
An area of greatly reduced magnetic shielding from cosmic rays.

Can’t hold a candle to Tennessee white lightning.

“You guys have some great fulgurites I bet!”

A friend that lives out in the ‘sticks’, used to have a tv antenna on a mast. Until a massive lightning strike.
The TV and everything connected was toasted and smoking, nail pops in the drywall...

No fulgurites were found?
Perhaps the wrong soil type?
I was disappointed...again.

I worked in telecommunications for forty years.   When I worked for MCI before we were bought by Verizon, we had fiber optic cables going across country and one day we had a whole fiber route crash.   The Field Engineers went out checking between each pull box in the ground and quickly isolated the segment that had failed, but could not see any problems.

They started digging and were amazed to find that a lightning strike had taken out the underground fiber.   There is always a small copper wire in the bundle of fiber threads, for the FE's to use with a field phone from one segment to another.   The found a fulgurite from a tree that had been hit by lightning running to the underground pull box vault.   They discovered that the lightning had vaporized the small copper wire and the intense heat had crystalised the hair thin fiber elements making them unusable.   It took a lot of explaining and photographs to make the engineers in Richardson, Texas to believe it actually happened.

Nobody ever thinks about the fact that the Fiber Optic Field Engineers not only have to be smart but their most used tool is a shovel, that and a snake bite kit.
