Polynesians, Native Americans made contact before European arrival, genetic study finds

Through deep genetic analyses, Stanford Medicine scientists and their collaborators have found conclusive scientific evidence of contact between ancient Polynesians and Native Americans from the region that is now Colombia—something that's been hotly contested in the historic and archaeological world for decades.

(snip)

Before the study brought scientific evidence to the debate, the idea that Native Americans and Polynesians had crossed paths originated from a complex—both in its structure and origins—carbohydrate: the sweet potato. It turns out the sweet potato, which was originally domesticated in South and Central America, has also been known to grow in one other place prior to European contact. That place is known as Oceania, which consists of many islands, including Polynesia.

I’m not satisfied with any explanations of how Polynesians made it to Hawaii, let along North America. We’re talking about thousands of miles of open ocean without even knowing that anything awaited them when they set out. Maybe some guys would be crazy enough to try but I doubt they would have take any women. So if they ever did reach Hawaii they would have had to go back and then return again in order to breed. It just seems beyond the realm of possibility.

There's interesting evidence that southern California's Chumash Indians built their canoes in the same way the Polynesians did. They're the only North American Indians that did so, suggesting they had contact with Polynesians at some point. Interesting article here: https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Did-ancient-Polynesians-visit-California-Maybe-2661327.php

Searching shows there's lots of other published info on this topic.

So Elizabeth Warren can tell Biden....Hey, Joey, choose me for VP and get the only affirmative action three-for in town: part Native American, part Polynesian Islander and woman-—hear me roar.

Biden: Can I go back into my basement now? She’s giving me a headache.

Great. Just replace Columbus statues with those of the god Eitumatupua, or other Polynesian figures.

According to a New York Times report, a genetic study provides evidence of contact between ancient Polynesians and indigenous South Americans around A.D. 1200. Comparing the DNA of more than 800 people from Polynesian islands and South America's Pacific Coast, researchers led by Andres Moreno-Estrada of Mexico's National Laboratory of Genomics for Biodiversity found that some people from Rapa Nui, or Easter Island, and surrounding islands have Native American ancestry that derives from individuals of the pre-Columbian Zenu culture, who lived some 800 years ago in what is now Colombia. The geneticists suggest that Polynesians journeyed to South America, bringing back Zenu individuals to the Marquesas and interbreeding with them. Alternatively, they posit, indigenous South Americans could themselves have sailed to eastern Polynesia and encountered Polynesians who had traveled there from farther east. Critics of the study noted similarities between the latter scenario and the controversial claims of Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl, who suggested that South Americans settled Polynesia. For more on recent research on Rapa Nui, go to "Around the World: Chile."
