Explanation: What are those spots on Jupiter? Largest and furthest, just right of center, is the Great Red Spot -- a huge storm system that has been raging on Jupiter possibly since Giovanni Cassini's likely notation of it 355 years ago. It is not yet known why this Great Spot is red. The spot toward the lower left is one of Jupiter's largest moons: Europa. Images from Voyager in 1979 bolster the modern hypothesis that Europa has an underground ocean and is therefore a good place to look for extraterrestrial life. But what about the dark spot on the upper right? That is a shadow of another of Jupiter's large moons: Io. Voyager 1 discovered Io to be so volcanic that no impact craters could be found. Sixteen frames from Voyager 1's flyby of Jupiter in 1979 were recently reprocessed and merged to create the featured image. About 43 years ago, Voyager 1 launched from Earth and started one of the greatest explorations of the Solar System ever.

My dad was the program manager for the RTG power plants on Voyager 1 and 2. Well done, Dad!

Fabulous! Better hide the photo... It will be offensive to someone for sure...

congrats from me as well. That Voyager is an amazing craft and those RTG Powerplants always impressed me as to how long they give out power.

That bald abstinent sex machine character in the pretty bad first Star Trek movie? The actress died 22 years ago, not counting that performance.

It is not yet known why this Great Spot is red.
The Not-So-Great Spot is pretty plain, hence the name. :^)

My dad was the manager at the Cape that launched it!
To: Whatever Works
Cool! Dad took the whole family to the first launch, but I had business obligations I couldnt get out of. I regret to this day not saying I have to miss this and go to the launch.
Amazing times. I look at all the young people on SpaceX and remember those old days with all of Dads amazing projects with fondness.

Ah, Persis Khambatta. Supposedly her untimely death was an Indian political hit-job.
I have to admit, I actually love the first movie. In fact, it’s my favorite of the whole franchise. I appreciate the slow pacing (compared to the nausea-inducing half-second cuts in films of the past 2 decades because audiences can’t stand anything slower) and Jerry Goldsmith’s magnificent score (one of the best ever done). The opening scene with the Klingon ships meeting V’Ger is worth the price of admission alone.
I met the director, Robert Wise, at a film lecture at Vanderbilt (he was not happy with it, though. It was acknowledged he did not have a grasp of the Trek universe, partially why the film was so heavy on drama and light on humor).
He wasn’t lacking for talent, because he had multiple Oscar wins (for “West Side Story” and “The Sound Of Music”) and was the film editor for arguably the greatest American movie ever made, “Citizen Kane.” He also directed what many consider to be the greatest sci-fi film ever made, “The Day The Earth Stood Still.” Aside from his negative experience with ST:TMP, I’d say the one where he was ordered by the studio to re-edit another film masterpiece, “The Magnificent Ambersons”, was the worst. Destroyed his relationship with Orson Welles.
