Is it safe to speak the truth about Kobe Bryant?
NY Post ^ | February 8, 2020 | 3:17pm | Phil Mushnick

Can we come out now? Is it safe, yet, to speak or write the truth? Or is it still too soon?

Since the sudden, tragic death of Kobe Bryant two weeks ago, I’ve thought of the many men who, in just the past three years, have had their careers and reputations destroyed or seriously stained by allegations of sexual harassment or assault.

Among them: Actors Scott Baio, Gerard Depardieu, Morgan Freeman. In TV, Tavis Smiley, Les Moonves, Matt Lauer. Noted astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, famous chef Mario Batali, opera star Placido Domingo. Minnesota Senator/comedian Al Franken was forced to resign over harassment allegations.

Some accusations are of alleged acts decades old.

Guilty as alleged? Who knows? But the accusations will chase them the rest of their lives.

Thus I wonder what their thoughts are on the instant and continuing posthumous deification of Bryant.

Two weeks after Bryant’s death, it’s still considered outrageously inappropriate to publicly state what we do know: He had a flip side. In 2003 he was forced to essentially admit his actions were unwelcomed by the 19-year-old.

Already a seven-year-pro, Bryant, in Colorado for physical rehab, was arrested after a teenaged hotel/spa worker claimed he raped her. Bryant, married, admitted to having had sex with her but by mutual consent.

The criminal case was dropped by prosecutors, when the accuser chose not to testify. The civil case was settled out of court, as Bryant reached a financial agreement with his accuser. But Bryant was bound to make the following statement, which began with:

“First, I want to apologize to the young woman involved in this incident. I want to apologize to her for my behavior that night and the consequences she has suffered in the last year.”

Better question is “is it necessary?”

Yes, just a misunderstanding.

It could be.

I can see a young woman star struck by a star athlete. He thought she was attractive and flirted. She was thrilled by the attention. They both were moving toward the same end; a sexual encounter.

What she didn't expect or may never has experienced was a man who liked to dominate women. Maybe her fantasy encounter was slow, tender, love making.

By the time things progressed it was too late for her and she was experiencing 'making love' in a way she never dreamed of.

I have no idea what happened between the two but I can envision a man and a woman having different ideas about sex especially if it's spur of the moment and you don't know each other very well.

The lesson some women regretfully learn too late is not to put themselves in a position where a man can misconstrue your intentions.

In the mind of a naive young woman, she may not fully understand what she's getting into.

First he denied having sex with her. Then he admitted it and claimed it was consensual. Then he tried to explain bruises on her neck. He said strangling was his thing.

“When asked about bruises on the accuser’s neck, Bryant admitted to “strangling” her during the encounter, stating that he held her “from the back” “around her neck”, that strangling during sex was his “thing” and that he had a pattern of strangling a different sex partner (not his wife) during their recurring sexual encounters. When asked how hard he was holding onto her neck, Bryant stated, “My hands are strong. I don’t know.” Bryant stated that he assumed consent for sex because of the accuser’s body language.[3][4]”

He was not convicted of rape. The fact she settled indicates he stuck it in a money-hungry so and so who accused him and then Kobe followed typical lawyer advice on what to say and do.

That statement wasnt necessary at all.

EXCEPT if it was part of a settlement...
or

he desparately was trying to rehabilitate his image.

Remember he was married at the time. That admission in public was very costly in a number of ways. And he was VERY VERY careful not to blame the girl or say she was lying.

LOL, you’re getting pretty good at falsifying what people actually write. I leave you to your ‘fun’ ...

One is born again ONLY ONCE. Henceforth they are eternally alive in their spirit ... the fleshly sole is another matter. Read 1 John 3:9 and see if something sinks in to understanding just what born from above means.

WHAT??? You asked if time made a difference and I applied the scenario to Weinstein in terms of time...as if you think 20 years have passed means you get a pass.

You dont get a pass.

A person can change their life. But they are still accountable for things they have done and don’t get a pass. You can’t just wave a want and pretend it didnt happen

The key to your rant “as if you think” ... run along and read someone else’s mind so you can get your jollies falsely attributing. I don’t think mind reading is allowed, however, at FR. You’ve been here long enough to know that.

You are the one that asked if years made a difference.

So answer it.

DOES IT??

the way you were responding to me indicates you think it does in Kobe’s case.

and if it does in Kobe’s case then it does for Weinstein as well.

So he strangled women but never his wife.

Can you imagine a wife having to sit through all of this.

Of course, he could have strangled her too but was just protecting her from further embarassment

Exactly. Some have reverted to a tribal culture where a member of your group can do no wrong.

Kobe Bryant was no angel.

There is no reason to recount his misdeeds to besmirch him in death.

I agree. It’s kind of like when McCain died. He was a POW, he was tortured. He was a Vet- people gave him that. He got a second chance at life. But his life afterwards was not one of “walking a Christian life”. He was an angry and vindictive man in his end days.

Bryant’s wife and kids do not need this at this moment in time. Maybe down the road folks feel the need to examine his life but not before he and his child are buried.

“Scum” the poster called me, who was afterwards allowed to remove JUST THAT SENTENCE in the POS’ angry response to me.

And the Kob’s daughter dying with him (but not necessarily the others’ deaths), in addition to his recent visit to church, apparently serve to prevent any further criticism of anything about him from being allowed.
