Ford Mustang driven by Steve McQueen in 'Bullitt' sells for $3.4 million

It was the highest price ever paid for a Ford Mustang at auction, according to David Morton, marketing manager for the auction house in Kissimmee, near Orlando. The buyer has not been publicly identified.

The unrestored muscle car, its "highland green" paint looking rusty and black upholstery splitting apart, starred in a 10-minute sequence in the 1968 film, getting airborne a few times as it sped through the hilly streets of San Francisco.

The car was auctioned without a reserve, or minimum sale price, a risky decision that could have forced the owners to sell low.

McQueen filmed with the window down so viewers could see he was behind the wheel. Although credited as the driver, McQueen actually shared the wheel with Hollywood stunt driver Bud Ekins, according to the movie database IMDB.

After filming, the Mustang was sold to a Warner Brothers employee, and later to a New Jersey police detective. He in turn sold it for $6,000 in 1974 to Robert Kiernan of Madison, New Jersey, who held onto the car until he died in 2014.

Kiernan rejected multiple offers for the car, including one from McQueen himself, according to the New York Times. He left it to his son, Sean.

I have never much liked mustangs and would not trade a good 56 chevy for this one, IF I had to keep it and not sell it.

I guess that’s not as ridiculous as the hedge fund manager that paid $5,000,000 for one of those GM Futuremobile Bus things at the Barrett Jackson show years ago.

GM Futuremobile Bus things...

That would be the one that Dave Kindig did, right?

What would one ever do with such a thing?

It's way too damned big for a driveway!

I can't see that appreciating much, either.

The upkeep would be horrendous.

Sometimes folks just got more money than sense...but as long as it's THEIR money, not mine, then all is well.

Steve McQueen died WAAAAY too young at 51.

I still watch him on Saturdays in ‘Wanted: Dead or Alive’.

He had other talents in racing, and was very accomplished on his motorcycles.

James Garner did alot of his own driving and was a racing fan, but not as many people know about that.

WDOA is a great show, with a kickass opening theme song back when they cared about such things. Trivia: James Garner was in the area and did a little stunt driving in the McQueen film, The Getaway.

Well one certainly does not want to be stuck riding in the back seat of a mustang.

Article is wrong in saying the sellers father bought it for $6000 as the seller said every time the car was sold it sold for $3500 and the opening bid for the car at the auction was also $3500. Where does Yahoo find these yahoo writers?
