There were a few movies in 1968 that prominently featured cars. Two of them were family films: “The Love Bug,” a Disney comedy about a Volkswagen Beetle race car that had a mind of its own, and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” featuring Dick Van Dyke and a Roald Dahl screenplay based on the Ian Fleming novel about a broken-down Grand Prix from the early 1900s that, given some TLC, is able to fly. And then there was “Bullitt.” Rated M (equivalent to PG today), it’s about a car – a 1968 Ford Mustang GT Fastback 2+2 in Highland Green with...

It was the highest price ever paid for a Ford Mustang at auction, according to David Morton, marketing manager for the auction house in Kissimmee, near Orlando. The buyer has not been publicly identified. The unrestored muscle car, its "highland green" paint looking rusty and black upholstery splitting apart, starred in a 10-minute sequence in the 1968 film, getting airborne a few times as it sped through the hilly streets of San Francisco. The car was auctioned without a reserve, or minimum sale price, a risky decision that could have forced the owners to sell low. McQueen filmed with the...

The iconic car emerged earlier this year after years out of the spotlight. The Ford Mustang GT 390 driven by Steve McQueen in cult classic Bullitt is set to make its first ever appearance outside of the United States at this month's Goodwood Festival of Speed. The car is one of the most famous and iconic cars from the silver screen. Two were used in the production – a stunt car (serial number ‘558), and another (serial number ‘559) which was driven by McQueen himself. The stunt car was uncovered in Mexico last year, but the hero car has been...

"McQueen was determined to have “the best car chase ever done,” recalls Carey Loftin. “I told Steve I knew a lot about camera angles and speeds to make it look fast....“The Charger ran rings around the Mustang"... In an interview with Motor Trend magazine, Steve McQueen related his desire to bring a high speed chase to the screen. “I always felt a motor racing sequence in the street, a chase in the street, could be very exciting because you have the reality objects to work with, like bouncing off a parked car. An audience digs sitting there watching somebody do...

I always liked that guy's films, own a couple of 'em. What an interesting read. Go to Wiki sometime and put his name in, wow. That guy was cool. I guess I didn't realize he died so young (ha, 50, I'm older than that). I can identify with him so much, what a trip. I love that film "Le Mans" because I am a racing film. It is basically stupid, except for the tasty automobiles, but I watch it every few months and always get a tear. I'm weird like that about films.

Three Weeks in Steve McQueen's World In the spring of 1963, Steve McQueen was on the brink of superstardom, already popular from his big-screen breakout as one of The Magnificent Seven and just a couple months away from entering the Badass Hall of Fame with the release of The Great Escape. Intrigued by his dramatic backstory and his off-screen exploits — McQueen was a reformed delinquent who got his thrills racing cars and motorcycles — LIFE sent photographer John Dominis to California to hang out with the 33-year-old actor and see what he could get. Three weeks and more than...

Now 45 years old and revamped for 2010 with new styling and more powerful V-8, the "pony car" that debuted in 1964 is strikingly muscular, more energetic than before and thoroughly cool for a modern buyer. You dont even have to pretend to be Steve McQueen, the lead actor in the 1968 film "Bullitt" who famously drove a Mustang in one of Hollywoods best chase scenes, to enjoy the new Mustangs unique persona.

Something you won’t hear or read about as McQueen enters a chic status among the Beautiful Poseurs that would’ve revolted him, is that he was a true iconoclast: a born-again Christian and conservative Republican who backed the Vietnam War. Keep in mind this was during the 60s and 70s when his generation of Hollywood was as liberal and hyper-politicized as today’s generation, only talented.

We know that history holds many surprises. One doesn't expect to learn more about the secret history of of the Gulag than we already know from both Solzhenitsyn's "Gulag Acrcipelago" and Anne Applebaum's "Gulag: A history." This feat, however, is exactly what author Tim Tzouliadis has accomplished: the previously unknown story of the thousands of Americans who, during the Depression, sought employment and a better future in the "worker's paradise" built by the Bolsheviks. All kinds of Americans joined the exodus. Some of them were Communists or fellow-travelors but the majority were average Americans - skilled workers promised paid passage,...

The May Day Moscow, 1935 William Christian Bullitt to Franklin Delano Roosevelt Moscow May 1, 1935 Dear Mr. President: I have just come back from the May Day parade on the Red Square. It has been a great show with tanks galloping across at 60 miles per hour and new pursuit airplanes at 400 kilometers p.h. Stalin came late and left early due, I was told, to a last minute hitch in the negotiations with the French. It was also noticeable that when he walked the short space from the Kremlin wall to Lenin’s tomb he held a...

SHEPHERDSVILLE - Bullitt County Sheriff Paul Parsley doesn't believe he should pay someone who wants to take his job. So on Wednesday, when deputy David Greenwell's intent to run for sheriff was publicized in The Pioneer News and The Courier-Journal, Parsley fired him. In a letter sent to Greenwell, Parsley stated, "... you informed the public and me personally that you are running against me for sheriff... Therefore, I am terminating your employment with me and my office for obvious reasons." (Greenwell provided a copy of the letter; Parsley could not be reached on Tuesday to confirm the document.) Parsley...

November 7, 2003 -- GREAT movies never die - they get remade. Rumor has it that Warner Bros. will remake the 1968 Steve McQueen classic "Bullitt," with Wolfgang Peterson at the helm as producer and/or director. Since Peterson's currently wrapping up "Troy," sources speculate that "Troy" star Brad Pitt may fill McQueen's shoes and play the San Francisco detective in the new version. Expected to sign on as producers: Peter Douglas, half-brother of Michael, and Chad McQueen, son of the late, great Steve.
