California announced new rules Friday for its state vehicle fleet to reduce pollution and reward automakers that are siding with it against the Trump administration.

Officials immediately barred state agencies from buying any sedans that only run on internal combustion engines, with exemptions for certain public safety vehicles. The state has about 40,000 vehicles, about 8,400 of which are sedans.

Starting next year, it will require state agencies to buy only from companies that recognize California’s authority to set greenhouse gas and zero emission vehicle standards.

Only BMW, Ford, Volkswagen and Honda have decided to back California and endorse stricter emissions and fuel economy standards than proposed by the Trump administration. …

Restraint of trade?

IF I was a car manufacturer, I would shut down my franchises/dealerships in that state and refuse to sell to them. After 2 or at most three did that, they would back off.

Great. As if we aren't already paying enough for all these state vehicles, now we have to pay for even more expensive vehicles and even more expensive ways of powering them.

Oh, well. We get the government we deserve. We voted for these rectums.

Commerce clause...

This is a case where it truly applies, will Trump employ it?

I know that some people on this forum believe that California doesn't have the right to restrict the purchase of vehicles to a short list as they have. Note, though, that this is the State of California and sub-units thereof that are restricting themselves. This does not affect the majority of California car-buyers -- they are free to purchase whatever is available that meets the emission standards, just as they have for past double-handful of years.

It's the ultimate buyer of the products, the State government, that are boycotting companies that don't recognize California's right to dictate emission standards.

As long as California government doesn't extend the boycott to other buyers (like California citizens) I don't see a problem.

They shouldn’t do it at government level either.

And what starts in CA state government makes its way down to the “people”.

Not being a citizen of the state, I really don’t care what they do; but I feel that we aren’t building the wall in the right location.

No, it's the tax payers who are the ultimate buyer. Did anyone ask the taxpayers? Was it put up to a vote?

Supplier boycott won’t necessarily work. Chevrolet stopped production (dumb) of the Caprice (including those for taxis and cop cars) and Ford backfilled the demand with the Crown Vic and Mercury Marquis.

Sucks, Hondas are good cars, and parts are cheap! Nice to see GM and and Chrysler fighting for drivers, for the first time in over a decade. Glad they could get around to it. Surprised regarding Ford, they were the ‘good guys’ during the Obama bailouts...but I guess the Soy-Boys took over there.

But plenty of other cars to choose from!

Interesting that Toyota didn’t. California’s loss, then.

“Interesting that Toyota didn’t. California’s loss, then.”

And to think that Ford, with their big, strong, pickup trucks, makes people feel so MANLY, yet they’re DEFEATED by Toyota, which, I guess, isn’t so soy-boy after all!

The only solution is to force CA to stop their hypocrisy. Make them walk, ban their lush lawn and swimming pool water and cut all their electrical use.

I’ve said for years that if a couple dozen major companies suddenly stopped all California operations, it wouldn’t take long for the people to revolt and sanity to once again take hold.

It’s not just California. Many organizations either voluntarily or by law are required to get criminal background checks for any employees or volunteers who work with children. Schools, day care, Sunday school, after school activities, sports teams, scouting groups etc.

It’s often a cost that the organization absorbs. Most states are reasonable at $10-20 for a check. In Pennsylvania, it’s over $120. How many volunteer non-profit organizations can afford that cost for every single volunteer?

Hey, you’d make a great nursery volunteer at church once every month or two. Cut us a check and fill out this form.
