Since his reasoning was mutilation was deemed a crime at the federal level and they didn’t have the authority, can’t the feds argue against them and try them under violation of civil rights?

I actually don’t disagree with the judge. There is nothing within Congress’s enumerated powers authorizing legislation prohibiting genital mutilation.
Funny that the federal judiciary waited until NOW to rediscover the enumerated powers doctrine, though.
This judge’s bizarre thinking and actions are what passes for “progressive” jurisprudence in modern day America. Its not just him. Its the mindset of what is happening in most law schools and at its core reflects the hedonistic values that are now common among all too many. Its no accident that Democrats get elected.

The judge made the right decision here. There would have been no Federal crime if these women had killed their daughters ... so what makes “genital mutilation “ such a pressing Federal matter?

No. The judge says — correctly — that such a thing would not be a FEDERAL crime.
Female genital mutilation falls under the heading of “cruel and unusual punishment”.
There are also many laws on the books EVERYWHERE regarding the non-consensual inflicting of mutilation or injury to persons who may be constrained and in a position of helplessness, against their will.
This is no better than poking out an eye with a white-hot iron.
Pretty sure that is mot a permissible act, even to extract information from a suspect in a crime.

In a liberal judge’s court a parent cannot stop their child from doing something stupid if that parent is Christian.
But a parent can mutliate their child if that parent i a Muslim.
This will not stand, and sooner or later such judges will have to start worrying at night.

Pretty much every liberal social crusade goes away when non-whites and non-western cultures are involved.
Feminism is an important cause when conservatives don't want to pay for some college girl's birth control pills. But when Muslims treat women worse than they treat cattle, that's just a beautiful aspect of another culture.
Along the same lines, liberals are all up in arms when a Christian baker won't sell a homo couple a cake for their homo-wedding, but don't have much to say when homosexuals are decapitated or thrown off towers in Muslim countries.
Even liberal "environmentalism" is very selective. They attack western societies for being "polluters" and for "overpopulation" (even though Western societies have the lowest rates of population growth and the most stringent controls on pollution in the world), but to say the same thing against any non-Western country would be "racist imperialism."
What we can conclude from this is that no liberal pet cause - women's lib, gay rights, the environment is really a sincere cause. They're just an excuse to destroy western societies, which is what liberalism is really all about.
